Description
The well-known unofficial label Homespun has released a CD recording of a performance by John Mayall and his Bluesbreakers at the famous Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on February 9, 1968, which was broadcast on local radio at the time on KSAN-FM. The godfather of the British blues revival (vocals, harmonica, organ, piano, and guitar) was joined by Keith Tillman on bass, Keef Hartley on drums, Dick Heckstall-Smith (soon to join Colosseum) on baritone saxophone, Chris Mercer on tenor saxophone, and future Rolling Stone Mick Taylor, the successor to other young six-string phenoms like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. The program features just five songs (including covers of classics by Elmore James, Otis Rush, and John Lee Hooker), but the performances are inspired and top-notch: a fascinating document of the golden age of white electric blues in the 1960s.
