recordings Sometime in New York City, released in 1972 under the name of John Lennon & Yoko Ono/The Plastic Ono Band. Coming from a September 1971 move from the UK to New York City, where he became increasingly involved in the political movements of the counterculture era, this album is heavily politically charged, with tracks addressing political and social issues ranging from sexism and racism to prison riots, incarceration, and colonialism. Perhaps as a result, the album was initially criticized for its political content, panned by fans and critics alike, and branded a commercial flop. However, the melodic sense and quality of each track have since been reevaluated. The original album was released as a two-disc set, coupling the studio album with live jams. However, the live recording was removed from the CD reissue, and the box set omitted the controversial title of “Woman, Is She a Slave of the World?”, which was released as a single. “Sometime in New York City: Alternate Masters” features alternate versions of all the tracks from the studio album, as well as tracks not previously available on official releases, making it a rich and valuable collection. Disc 1, the “Alternate Album,” features all the album’s tracks in uniquely selected remixes, demos, and alternate versions. The second half
features all the album tracks as instrumental backing tracks without vocals. Enjoy the songs themselves, regardless of the lyrics, and rediscover the merits of each song. Disc 2, the “Studio Sessions,” features outtakes of “A Woman Is a Slave of the World,” “New York City,” and “Happy Christmas (War Is Over).” The session recording of the light-hearted rock ‘n’ roll number “New York City” has been upgraded from the original mono recording to a stereo demix. Disc 3 features a collection of primarily acoustic home demos and studio rehearsals. These simple, pure demos offer a direct glimpse into John’s songwriting process, and the selection includes some currently rare recordings. This 2025 Special Collector’s Edition includes audio previously only available in fragments on the Lost Lennon Tapes and various compilations, making it a noteworthy compilation of related audio material from the album “Sometime in New York City” that has never been officially released before.
