Description
Royal Albert Hall, London, UK 18th February 1969 STEREO SBD (from Original Masters)
Jimi Hendrix’s 1969 Royal Albert Hall is summarized in the highly popular “ROYAL ALBERT HALL 1969 2ND NIGHT COMPLETE,” which has been pressed for the second time. In addition, it was a famous recording that has been around since the days of analog LPs.
In the 1990s, audience recordings of the first day of the RAH were unearthed. It is certainly valuable that Aud was left behind at a live performance of this era, but sadly, it is also true that the sound quality was at the limit of the 1969 Aud. This also solidified Jimi’s reputation as the second day of the RAH, but it was only in 2018 that a stereo soundboard recording of the first day, the existence of which had not been confirmed until then, was unearthed.
Even this Aud has been appreciated, but the impact of the sound board was immeasurable, but the sound quality was so good that enthusiasts were excited. The sound quality is so good that it could be officially released in stereo as it is. It was immediately released by labels such as Eat A Peach and Moonchild.
More than five years have passed since the discovery of the stereo soundboard from the first day of RAH, which shocked enthusiasts around the world with these releases. The sound quality of the files from the first day of RAH, sent by overseas enthusiasts, is clearly better than the master from 2018. The biggest difference is that compared to this version, the 2018 version had a compressed, swishy feel to songs such as “Foxy Lady” and “Purple Haze,” where Mitch Mitchell’s cymbals stand out.
Furthermore, because this version is not compressed, it gives a natural and clear sound spread, as if the sound quality itself has been peeled off. This is not due to equalization, but is clearly due to the good condition of the sound source itself. It is truly worthy of being called a high-level master. At this point, it is a stereo sound board that will not be inferior even if it is officially released.
In addition, this stereo sound board has cuts between songs, and the 2018 version already had the audience recording patched into the relevant part when the sound source was released. In other words, it was “compressed” and “filled” by the sound source owner before it was distributed. However, this time it is in an uncompressed, natural and clear state, and there is no Aud compensation. From this, it is clear that it is in the state before the 2018 distribution.
For this release, we have not made any Aud compensation in the cuts between songs. The reason is that the Aud was distant and vague, and the hiss noise was a bad recording with harsh sound. And in front of the improved sound quality of this stereo sound board, the difference in sound quality is too much. In addition, the compensation was not related to the performance, and there were many scenes where no sound was heard. By daring to omit these small tricks this time, you can listen carefully to the whole work as the best stereo sound board album without any sense of incongruity of the sound source.
And it was a completely different live performance from the second day of RAH, which is a testament to Jimi’s live performance, which shows a completely different look depending on the day. Since there was also filming there, the set list included “a composition that included flashy numbers” and “guest participation in anticipation of the movie release”, but on this day, the set list was normal in a good sense. Starting with “Tax Free”, he slowly gets excited with his usual pattern. It may be related to the fact that there are no filming cameras, but it is clear that Jimi is concentrating on his performance.
And by the time of “Spanish Castle Magic”, Jimi was at full throttle. The performance broke after 4 minutes of this song. So Jimi started playing the draft of “Message To Love”! It was a famous scene from Aud, but when you hear it on an official level stereo soundboard like this, it’s thrilling and goosebumpy. On the second day of RAH, there is a famous board that has reached the second press, but on the first day of RAH, the definitive version that will be the twin of the two has finally appeared!
