While Garcia’s soaring guitar solos with the Grateful Dead are truly magnificent, this collaboration with Grisman on mandolin reflects the very roots of Garcia’s musical soul. It beautifully captures the spirit of old-time American roots music.

The duo revisits and reinterprets folk songs, traditional ballads, and music from both Black and white communities in 1930s America, showcasing the richness of this cultural heritage.

Only two tracks from this live set overlap with the official 1996 Garcia/Grisman studio release, Shady Grove, making this performance a unique and invaluable addition for fans.
