Description

Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY, USA 19th July 2016

Jeff Beck has finally joined the Port Chester excavation series, which has been producing a steady stream of groundbreaking, never-before-seen soundboard recordings. And what’s more, this is a phenomenal release that will pour the incredibly precious first night of the “LOUD HAILER Tour” into your brain.

This release features a recording of the “Port Chester performance on July 19, 2016.” It’s the first-ever soundboard recording of that performance. At the time, we introduced it as an audience recording, “PORT CHESTER 2016 (Uxbridge 586),” as the first announcement of the tour, but of course, this is something completely different. It’s an unearthed, official-quality soundboard recording taken directly from the mixing console.

Furthermore, when it comes to professional recordings from the ‘LOUD HAILER’ era, the official release ‘LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL’ and the masterpiece pro-shot ‘BALOISE SESSION 2016’ also reign supreme as iconic works. First, let’s review the overview of their activities at that time and confirm the relationship between each of them.

[An incredibly rare, superb full soundboard recording featuring BONES]
This Port Chester performance was the opening night of the “LOUD HAILER TOUR,” a concert just four days after the album’s release. On the other hand, this show also took place about three weeks before the official release, “LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL,” but the show itself was completely different. The official release was a special concert celebrating Jeff’s 50th anniversary, but this show was a regular stage performance on the “LOUD HAILER Tour,” which heavily featured BONES. “LOUD HAILER” is a controversial album that boldly employed the UK female duo BONES (vocals by Rosie Bones and guitar by Carmen Vandenberg). It surprised the world with its unconventional approach of featuring a husky, coquettish female voice, and this night was the first time that this was shown to unfold on stage.

This recording, capturing such a show, is a highly acclaimed, unearthed, official-quality soundboard recording directly connected to the mixing console, befitting the series’ reputation. Jeff’s guitar, a bundle of nuances, is raw and expressive, with every detail—the touch of his fingertips, the subtle fluctuations of the tremolo arm, the moments when feedback disrupts the air—captured with an immersive quality that allows you to replay everything in your mind. All the details that were lost in the venue’s acoustics in audience recordings are now right in front of your ears. This kind of “close” experience of Jeff’s guitar is a privilege only a soundboard recording can offer.

[A full show consisting of new LOUD HAILER songs and classics]
This is the sound you can enjoy in a full show where new songs from ‘LOUD HAILER’ and classics spanning their career intertwine. Although it’s a regular stage of the “LOUD HAILER Tour,” it’s quite different from the iconic pro-shot ‘BALOISE SESSION 2016’. Let’s compare and organize them here.

●Loud Hailers (6 songs)
– The Revolution Will Be Televised / Live in the Dark / The Ballad of the Jersey Wives / OIL (Can’t Get Enough of That Sticky) / Scared for the Children / Right Now
●Classics (11 songs)
– Vocal (Jimmy Hall): Morning Dew / A Change Is Gonna Come / Roll and Tumble Blues / Superstition
– Instrumental: Freeway Jam (★) / Stratus (★) / The Pump (★) / Even Odds (★) / Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers / You Never Know (★) / A Day In The Life (★) *Note:
Songs marked with “★” were not included in the iconic pro-shot ‘BALOISE SESSION 2016’.

…And that’s how it went. The real highlight was the new songs from ‘LOUD HAILER’. New tracks made up about a third of the show, with Rosie Bones’ husky vocals intertwining with Jeff’s guitar. Every song was exclusive to this tour and was never performed again, becoming part of the repertoire forever sealed away after Jeff’s passing. The rarity of hearing Rosie’s voice and Jeff’s guitar intertwined at such close range on the soundboard will only increase with time.

On the other hand, the contrast with tracks like “Morning Dew,” “A Change Is Gonna Come,” “Roll and Tumble Blues,” and “Superstition,” where Jimmy Hall’s male blues voice shines, is a unique flavor of this album. Rosie’s coquettish vocals and Jimmy’s soulful blues voice alternate rapidly, and in the instrumental numbers, only Jeff’s tone, emanating from his fingertips, dominates the space. The soundboard captures every nuance of this colorful show.

This is the Jeff Beck edition of the Port Chester soundboard discovery series. It’s an excellent alternative to an official release, offering a superb listening experience of the already rare ‘LOUD HAILER’ era. Please enjoy it to the fullest.
