PARACHUTE RECORDS – 2 LP Parachute Recording Company is releasing an unofficial double vinyl radio recording of an early concert the Grateful Dead held on October 22, 1967 at Winterland in San Francisco: one of the first performances by the band, which had recently expanded to a sextet with the addition of drummer/percussionist Mickey Hart alongside Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and Bill Kreutzmann, in the new venue opened by promoter Bill Graham and built in the space of a former skating rink with a capacity significantly larger than that of the pre-existing Fillmore West. The setlist – containing three selections from the self-titled debut album released 7 months earlier (Bonnie Dobson’s “Morning Dew”, Jesse Fuller’s “Beat It On Down The Line” and Obray Ramsey’s “Cold Rain And Snow”), blues and rhythm and blues covers sung by Pigpen (Elmore James’ “It Hurts Me Too” and Bobby Bland’s “Turn On Your Lovelight”) and some previews from the following “Anthem Of The Sun” (“New Potato Caboose” and a nearly 15-minute version of “That’s It For The Other One”) – shows a band rhythmically reinforced by the double drum kit and ready to explore new territories by venturing into psychedelic improvisation.
