Live at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London, UK 2nd May 1976 TRULY PERFECT SOUND
★This is an amazing photo.
GENTLE GIANT marked the end of their golden age with the concept album “INTERVIEW” in 1976. This superb live album lets you experience the scene.
This work is recorded from the “May 2, 1976 London performance.” It is an ultra-clear audience recording. Speaking of the 1976 live performance, the traditional official work “PLAYING THE FOOL” is also available, but of course (?) this work is a completely different performance. In order to organize the situation around that, let’s first take a bird’s-eye view of the activities at that time and approach the position of this work.
《INTERVIEW released on April 23》

[An ultra-clear recording that transcends the era and conventional standards for audience recording]
This is GENTLE GIANT in 1976. They were busy with the “INTERVIEW Tour” in 1976, and the official live album “PLAYING THE FOOL” was produced on the final leg of that tour, “Europe #2.” The following year, 1977, they switched to the “PLAYING THE FOOL Tour.” Conversely, the London performance on this album was at the beginning of the tour. It was the third concert of the “UK” leg, which began immediately after the album’s release.

This vacuum-packed recording is a superbly clear masterpiece. A powerful core penetrates the center of the crystal-clear atmosphere, and the details are super clear down to the finest details. Even when the ensemble becomes indecipherably intertwined, it’s awe-inspiringly separate. While the timbre is audience-like, each sound quality check is no different from a soundboard.
Every single note is beautifully rendered, but the bass is particularly striking. While audience recordings tend to be either sparse or explosive, this work is ferociously beautiful. Each attack sound stands out with a bang, and whether the phrases are played quickly or blaring, there’s no muddiness or cloudiness whatsoever. Despite its power, there’s no distortion at all in the peaks, and the beauty is unwavering from the moment the first note rises to its demise. Even now, in 2025, half a century later, it’s rare to encounter such a stunning sound. This is truly a timeless recording.
[A full set different from “PLAYING THE FOOL”]
Such a miraculous clear sound depicts a stage that is similar but different from “PLAYING THE FOOL”. The evolved version of the official traditional work “THE COMPLETE LIVE EXPERIENCE” is still fresh in my memory, but it also showcases repertoire that cannot be heard there. Let’s organize it by comparing it here.

… and so on. There are many medley arrangements, so it is not possible to make a strict comparison of the number of songs, but the show with rare songs at key points is still very fresh.
Another interesting piece is the “Intro (Instrumental)” in the middle of the concert. The concert was actually divided into two parts, with “So Sincere (and percussion solo)” marking the end. The band members left the stage for a few minutes. “Intro (Instrumental)” is actually a tape played during that intermission. While not a live performance, the audio, compiled from various sources, is extremely unique. It includes sounds of drums and glockenspiel, a portion of the intro tape used at the beginning of the concert, and even a portion of another pre-recorded tape used at the start of a concert in late 1975. These various sounds are jumbled together, sometimes played forward and sometimes backward. This tape itself is a rare, rarely recorded sound source, and can be enjoyed in superb sound quality.
Gentle Giant, a band second only to the top five, never made a comeback or performed in Japan. This is a cultural heritage album that lets you experience their precious stage performance in real time. Enjoy the ideal form of progressive rock and the clear sound that goes beyond the audience’s common sense with this best master work.
★Super clear audience recording of “May 2, 1976 London performance.” A soundboard-class recording with a powerful core that penetrates on, and the details are super clear down to the finest details. Even when the ensemble becomes so intertwined that it is impossible to decipher, the sense of separation that does not mix at all is tremendous. You can experience a delicious show on site, including repertoire that cannot be heard even in “PLAYING THE FOOL”, such as “Give It Back”, “Cogs in Cogs”, and “Talybont”.
