★First appearance of soundboard!!
GENESIS continues to be the subject of a historic first appearance soundboard excavation rush. The latest edition, “THE MAMA Tour”, will be released simultaneously as two titles.
This work is the second part of such a two-part release. It is a stereo soundboard recording of the “Pittsburgh performance on December 7, 1983.” Speaking of “THE MAMA Tour,” not only the official video but also our soundboard masterpiece “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER (Amity 515)” is a big classic, and this week two works will be released simultaneously. To avoid confusion, let’s first check the position by looking at the activity overview at that time.
●1983
January 22nd – February 20th: Phil’s solo tour
(April/June: “THE WICKED LADY” and “THE FUGITIVE” released)
(October 3rd: “GENESIS” released)
November 7th – December 17th: North America #1 (35 shows) ←★Here★
●1984
January 6th – February 20th: North America #2 (31 shows)
February 25th – 29th: UK (5 shows) ←※Official footage
(May – December: “NO JACKET REQUIRED” production)
This is GENESIS in 1983/1984. The official video “THE MAMA TOUR” was the final “UK” leg, but most of the records were concentrated in “North America # 1”. This week’s two-part series was also born from “North America # 1”. Let’s focus on the dates further.
● Details of “North America # 1”
・November 7th-25th (15 performances)
*November 26th + 27th “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER”
・November 28th-30th (3 performances)
*December 1st “HARTFORD 1983 SOUNDBOARD”
・December 2nd-5th (4 performances)
*December 7th: Pittsburgh performance ←★This work★
・December 8th-17th (8 performances)
… and so on. In addition to this, we have introduced masterpieces such as “BUFFALO 1983 (Amity 798)”, “GREENSBORO 1983 (Amity 652)” and “THAT’S ALL, DETROIT (Amity 129)”, but they are audience recordings. The sound boards are the above three works (four performances).
This work, which conveys such a show, is a masterpiece with an incredible sense of directness from the mix desk, which is the essence of the newly discovered series. In particular, this work has a wide stereo feel and a great sense of separation. As always, the other-dimensional synchronization that makes the band seem to climb into your brain with their shoes on is as immersive as ever, but the ensemble’s immersive feeling that spreads to every corner of your skull is even more than usual. Furthermore, the slightly echoey tone is more lustrous than usual.
Another checkpoint is that audience recordings were also made on this day. The intervals between songs after the performances of “Carpet Crawlers” and “Los Endos” were filled in for about 40 seconds each, but even more importantly, the last “Turn it on Again Medley” was recorded as a full audience recording for about 10 and a half minutes. While audience compensation, which changes the sound, is a matter of taste, it’s still nice to be able to reproduce the entire show.
With such compensation, this work has been completed as a masterpiece exceeding two and a half hours in total length. Since the medley will be a sad separation in the two-disc set, we have decided to make it a big three-disc set. Let’s organize the full set here.
●When they were a trio
: Abacab: Dodo-Lurker (some AUD compensation) / Abacab / Man On The Corner (★) / Who Dunnit? (★) / Keep It Dark
; Genesis: That’s All / Mama / Illegal Alien / Home By The Sea / Second Home By The Sea / It’s Gonna Get Better
; Others: Follow You, Follow Me (★) / Misunderstanding / Turn It On Again (all AUD)
●Classics
medley [★: Eleventh Earl of Mar / Squonk / Firth of Fifth] [In the Cage / The Cinema Show / In That Quiet Earth / The Colony of Slippermen / Afterglow]
; Others: Carpet Crawlers (★) / Los Endos
*Note: Songs marked with “★” are songs that could not be heard on the soundboard masterpiece “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER (Amity 515)”.
On this day, “Misunderstanding” was not played, so it was less than the simultaneously released “HARTFORD 1983 SOUNDBOARD”, but it still completely surpassed the missing “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER”.
Another highlight of this album is the performance itself, with Phil Collins in particular in top form. Not only does he deliver powerful vocals throughout, but even his MC is incredibly energetic. For example, after “Carpet Crawlers,” he begins his usual narration, “This city is the center of the universe…etc.”, but then he starts talking about someone who bothered him when he arrived in Pittsburgh. The content is rambling, and I have no idea what happened, but his tone is almost angry. I’m not sure if he’s mad because he’s remembering something, or if he’s just excited by the live performance, but whatever the circumstances, even his unusually energetic voice is incredibly direct and directly ingrained in my brain.
Since “Misunderstanding” was not performed and there was some audience complementation, the masterpiece would be “HARTFORD 1983 SOUNDBOARD,” but this work surpasses the glossy, beautiful, and wide sound. It’s a two-part series that is hard to choose between. Even just the appearance of two top-notch soundboards is a big deal, but it suddenly plays the summit battle of the tour. Please enjoy this luxurious two-part series, where you can fully enjoy the extraordinary situation in the history of GENESIS sound sources.
★Stereo soundboard recording of the “Pittsburgh performance on December 7, 1983.” This is a masterpiece with an incredibly direct feel thanks to the direct connection to the mix desk. The stereo feeling is wide, the separation is excellent, and the tone with a slight echo is lustrous. This is a new masterpiece that will pour into your brain the full show that you couldn’t experience in the official video “THE MAMA TOUR” or the classic “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER.”
