Description

Apollo Theatre, Glasgow, Scotland 28th April 1980 STERERO SBD
GENESIS is discovering shocking soundboards one after another. The latest edition, “DUKE Tour”, will be released simultaneously.
This work is the first part of two consecutive works from the “DUKE” era. It is a stereo soundboard recording of the “April 28, 1980 Glasgow Performance.” Speaking of “DUKE Tour” soundboards, the press masterpieces “DEFINITIVE SHEFFIELD 1980 (Virtuoso 389/390)” and “PERFECT MONTREAL (Virtuoso 057/058)” are also well known. In order to organize that collection, let’s first take a bird’s-eye view of the activities at that time.

[Production of “FACE VALUE” started in August]
This is GENESIS in 1980. The “DUKE Tour” can be roughly divided into “UK” and “North America”, and the Glasgow performance of this work is naturally the former. It was a concert 11 days after (8 performances after) the iconic work “DEFINITIVE SHEFFIELD 1980”.
What came out of that show was a superbly clear and direct soundboard. When you play it, the audience-like sound suddenly pops out and you think, “What?”, but it only lasts about 30 seconds. Apparently, the (slight) missing parts of the newly excavated soundboard are being complemented with the audience recording of the same day, and it immediately turns into a clear and straightforward soundboard.
And from there it’s paradise. As with the recent series of first-time soundboards, the unprocessed feel of the direct connection to the mix table is incredible, but the clarity is better than usual. Not only is the large audience far away, but there is no hiss or hum to be felt, and it shines crystal clear. This is a soundboard that already imprints the subtleties of the performance on your brain, but the resolution of this work is unusually high.
The clear soundboard is perfect for the “DUKE Tour.” “DUKE” is a masterpiece that leans toward pop and catchy, while also showcasing the pride of progressive rock. As an album beloved by progressive rock fans as its final masterpiece, the bright, clear sound that captures the live performance down to the finest details is the perfect solution.
Another point about the “DUKE Tour” is that the set changes significantly between the first and second halves of the tour. This work is the first half of the “UK” leg, while the sister work “SARATOGA SPRINGS 1980 (Amity 824)” allows you to enjoy the second half of the “North American” leg. Here, let’s organize the full set while focusing on the differences.
●When they were a trio (10 songs)
・And then the three remained: Deep In The Motherlode/Say It’s Alright Joe (★)/The Lady Lies/Follow You Follow Me (★)
・Duke: Behind The Lines/Duchess/Guide Vocal/Turn It On Again/Duke’s Travels/Duke’s End
●Classics (9 songs + more)
・Moonlit Knight: Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
・Trick of the Tale: Squonk/Ripples…/Dance On A Volcano/Los Endos
・Others: The Carpet Crawlers (★)/One For The Vine (★)/The Knife (★)/Medley [In the Cage/The Colony of Slippermen/Afterglow]
*Note: Songs marked with “★” are not included on the sister album “SARATOGA SPRINGS 1980 SOUNDBOARD.”
… and it looks like this. Speaking of the “British” leg soundboard, the press masterpiece “DEFINITIVE SHEFFIELD 1980” reigns as a symbol, but “The Knife” is a song that I couldn’t hear there either.
Although it was only available in limited quantities, it was introduced by the Amity label due to the audience complement, but the quality and impact are of a permanent preservation class. Conventional wisdom would say it’s a major excavation once every 10 years. This is a new masterpiece that lets you experience the amazingness of the GENESIS collection, which has become a soundboard anomaly. Please experience it to your heart’s content.
★ Stereo soundboard recording of “April 28, 1980 Glasgow Performance (Day 2)”. This is one of the recent series of first appearance soundboards, and it is a superb soundboard with a direct connection to the mix table, and is extremely clear and direct. This is a new masterpiece that allows you to enjoy a delicious full show, including songs that you can’t hear in the second half of the tour, such as “Say It’s Alright Joe” and “Follow You Follow Me”.
