[Natural FM sound that transforms your room into 1980]
This is FOGHAT in 1980. The tour in support of “TIGHT SHOES” was a large-scale one, spanning 90 performances, but all of them were concentrated in the United States. The Chicago performance featured on this album is from the early stages of the tour. It was the 19th performance of “US #1,” a prime time when the engine was fully warmed up and tour fatigue hadn’t yet set in.
This recording, which captures such a show, is a recently released best master, and its sound is a truly pleasant, natural FM sound. Although detailed information about the dubbing generation is not available, it is remarkably fresh, as one would expect from a younger generation. The frequency balance is refined, as is typical of broadcast broadcasts, and Lonesome Dave Peverett’s vocals and Rod Price’s guitar reach the ear without any sense of airiness. And above all, the moment you press the play button, it has the feeling of transporting your room back to 1980. That is the greatest charm of this recording.
[Plenty of rare tracks that cannot be heard in the classic 70s recordings]
This natural FM sound depicts a passionate performance that seems to challenge the new 80s. Our FOGHAT collection mainly consists of 70s recordings such as ‘BOOGIE OUTLAWS (Trial-274)’, ‘RICHMOND 1975 SOUNDBOARD (Uxbridge 2057)’, and ‘LA FORUM 1975 MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES (Uxbridge 2208)’. This album is from about five years later, and the set has changed significantly. Here, let’s organize it by comparing it with the classic albums.
● Fool for the City (3 songs)
– My Babe / Fool For the City / Slow Ride
● Others (8 songs)
– Foghat: I Just Wanna Make Love To You / Maybelline (★)
– Rock ‘n’ Roll Outlaws: Eight Days On The Road / Chateau Lafitte ’59 Boogie
– Others: Stone Blue (★) / Drivin’ Wheel (★) / Loose Ends (★) / Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool) (★)
*Note: Songs marked with “★” were not found on the official traditional album ‘FOGHAT LIVE’, nor on any of our store’s standard releases ‘BOOGIE OUTLAWS’, ‘RICHMOND 1975’, or ‘LA FORUM 1975’.
…and so on. Whether it was the broadcaster’s decision or not, the only new song from ‘TIGHT SHOES’ was “Loose Ends,” with a string of killer tracks from the 70s. However, the repertoire included plenty of songs that couldn’t be heard on their previous masterpieces. In particular, “Third Time Lucky” is a delightful track that isn’t even present on ‘DECADES LIVE’.
Despite being a true live band, FOGHAT’s live albums are surprisingly lacking. This soundboard album lets you experience their “TIGHT SHOES Tour” right in your mind. The natural FM sound transforms your room into 1980, making it a time machine album. Please enjoy it to the fullest.
