Festival Hall, Melbourne, Australia 11th March 1980 SBD
FLEETWOOD MAC in 1980 was at the height of its power with three consecutive hits: “Fantastic Mac,” “Rumors,” and “Fangs.” Here is a soundboard album that will let you hear the live performance in your brain.
This work was recorded at the Melbourne performance on March 11, 1980. This is the direct sound board. 1980 was a memorable heyday, with the Japan tour that marked a career gap. On the other hand, when it comes to live albums, only Japanese recordings and the official “LIVE” album stand out, and full recordings of overseas performances were not so good. First of all, let’s take a look at the overview of the activities at that time and also approach the position of this work.

This is FLEETWOOD MAC in the “Task” era. While focusing on three North American continental tours, the first half of 1980 also saw the Pacific Rim (Japan → Oceania → Hawaii) leg. The Melbourne performance of this work was the 11th concert of such “Oceania”.
This work recorded at such a show is a raw sound board where the unprocessed performance sound sounds in the brain. There are various types of “sound boards”, but this work is clearly a direct mix table system. The loud cheers whisper far away…or rather, it is at a level where you can only feel it by listening carefully with headphones. There is no trace of effect or balance adjustment on each instrument, and the rawness of the instruments being played right there is intense, and the mix balance that is changed for the venue PA is also rough. In addition, the sound image with the howling and slight hiss that occurs involuntarily also conveys the reality of the scene where the show is currently in progress.
In fact, the sound image is more like a studio rehearsal than a large-venue concert, but that doesn’t explain the heat of the performance. The beat, which seems to be somehow controlling the rising tension, emits a fierce groove, and the aggressive shouts that would not be possible without a large audience in front of you are also super hot. Only such live performances come into your brain with dirty feet… That’s the kind of immersive feeling you get.
Such a direct-connected sound board depicts a full show that seems to have concentrated and reduced the three big hits. It is a selection that is similar to the traditional official work “LIVE” and the Japanese performance sound board “YOKOHAMA 1980 SOUNDBOARD (Uxbridge 1798)”, so let’s organize it by comparing it here.

Even though I can’t hear the cheers that must have been swirling around the venue, I can clearly feel the momentum of the prime. This is a leaked soundboard album that allows you to enjoy such a hot live performance. It was introduced by the Uxbridge label because it does not reach the quality of the official masterpiece “LIVE”, but for soundboard enthusiasts, this feeling of exposure is delicious. This is a masterpiece of such a newly excavated live album. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★Direct soundboard recording of the “March 11, 1980 Melbourne performance”.
