Festival Hall, Melbourne, Australia 8th December 1987 STEREO SBD/AUD
The 1987 tour, which was backed by the Confederates, formed after the release of the masterpiece “KING OF AMERICA,” has long been well-known for its television and radio broadcasts of performances in Japan, but both were broadcast for less than half the time of the actual live performance.
However, at the end of last year, a PA-out soundboard recording of the Melbourne stage two weeks later suddenly leaked. Moreover, the sound quality is good in stereo, and the recording time is much longer than the various broadcasts of Japanese performances.
Although it was an amazing PA sound board that shocked Costello enthusiasts all over the world, on the other hand, the reality was that the recording condition was not one that could be enjoyed without reservation.
The lack of Costello’s vocals at the beginning and middle of the concert is quite striking, suggesting that the recording was made to check the Confederates’ band sound.
This time it is a PA sound board with very good sound quality, so if it weren’t for this defect, it seems like it could have been released on a press CD.
Fortunately, there is an audience recording from the same day. This is also excellent sound quality, and although it is not as good as the sound board this time, the sound image is large and quite easy to hear. However, there is a problem with the pitch being high.
For this release, the pitch of this Aud has been carefully adjusted and the missing parts have been filled in. This allows for a complete recording of the live performance!
In addition, the editing of the moment when the audio switches from AUD to SBD on “Sally Sue Brown” and “Tokyo Storm Warning” is extremely vivid. Not only has the complete recording been achieved, but this superb editing has also made it a stress-free and easy-to-listen-to live album.
Even so, the main newly excavated PA soundboard has a very good stereo sound. The direct feeling that flows directly from the ears to the brain, which is unique to this type of recording, is utilized to the fullest.
The vivid sound of James Burton’s Telecaster is particularly striking. The Confederates’ outstanding performance, featuring only renowned musicians, can be enjoyed with the stunning vividness that only a PA output can provide.
And yet, you can still hear the Costello solo part, which is full of great songs. In fact, the sound board recording resumed from the end of “Alison”, and the solo version of “Pump It Up” that was shown before that was also supplemented by the audience recording.
In this way, the amazing soundboard recording was reborn in a state suitable for release. Even if it wasn’t, it was a surprising new excavation soundboard from the “KING OF AMERICA” tour, which is very popular among enthusiasts, and just after the performance in Japan!
