Fans have been eagerly awaiting this release, which completely captures the live performance at the Okayama Arts Creation Theater Harenowa Grand Theatre on March 3rd, the final day of Dream Theater’s 40th anniversary Japan tour
, in astonishingly high-quality sound. The familiar XAVEL label delivers a multi-stereo IEM matrix audio source. Multiple IEM sources with different mix balances used by each band member on stage are exquisitely blended with the label’s original high-quality audience source and mixed in stereo. With perfectly separated keyboards and guitars in the left and right channels, drums that come at you with overwhelming stereo separation, a bass with a powerful, gritty midrange that is characteristic of line-in recordings, and vocals that have a strong presence in the center, this recording captures every aspect of the band’s sound with astonishing separation and resolution that approaches stereo soundboard recordings, while also allowing you to feel the presence unique to live performances, such as the deep bass and the excitement of the audience. Clicks are used in some songs, mainly new songs, but they are almost completely absent in the opening number, Metropolis, and other landmark numbers, so you should be able to enjoy it without feeling any stress.
The two-part, nearly three-hour-long performances on this tour show significant changes in content from day to day, and this Okayama performance is a classic setlist that concludes the live show with “Pull Me Under”. This is
the fastest definitive title that conveys the entirety of the special tour celebrating the band’s 40th anniversary, which began with Mike Portnoy’s surprise return. This is a limited-edition memorial item that comes with a Japanese obi strip.
