The Doobie Brothers were at the height of their popularity in 1979, with their album “Minute by Minute” and single “What a Fool Believes” reaching number one in the US. Here comes a soundboard album that will bring that live performance right to your brain.
This work records the “July 4, 1979 Los Angeles performance.” It is a stereo soundboard recording. 1979 was a memorable year for the band’s second visit to Japan, but it also saw a change in members during the tour. This is THE DOOBIE BROTHERS in 1978/1979. “MINUTE BY MINUTE” was released at the end of 1978, and they also came to Japan in early 1979. The lineup change occurred shortly thereafter. The Los Angeles performance of this work took place at “North America #5” after John McPhee, Chet McCracken, and Cornelius Bumpass joined. This was the fourth performance of that concert.
This show is also known for its FM broadcast, a staple that has spawned numerous pre-releases. This work is its highest-level update. It’s a newly released master, digitized directly from the original air check reels. As a result, there are no visible dubbing marks, no roughness, and no creases. The unwavering brilliance is superb from start to finish, and the performance sound is smooth down to the tiniest nuances. Listening with headphones is so immersive that it’s as if you’re listening to the broadcast waves with your brain. Of course, the performance, broadcast, and recording were all done with 1970s equipment, so the tone has a subtle analog feel, but even that is a taste. It’s a sound that could be described as “official excavation grade.”
This rich and vintage FM sound depicts a full show that was a huge hit with “MINUTE BY MINUTE.” While playing plenty of the latest hits (at the time), that’s not all. Let’s organize the set list here.
●Tom Johnston era (12 songs)
・Captain and Me: Clear As The Driven Snow / Long Train Runnin’ / China Grove
・Stampede: Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While) / Sweet Maxine / Neal’s Fandango / Slat Key Soquel Rag / I Cheat the Hangman
・Others: Jesus Is Just Alright / Black Water (with Novi Novog and Kenny Loggins) / Road Angel / Listen To The Music (with Sal Valentino and Novi Novog)
●Michael McDonald era (10 songs)

*Note: Songs marked with “★” are exclusive to this tour.
…And that’s how it is. It combines the killer songs from the Johnston and McDonald eras in an almost equal balance. You can enjoy not only the Grammy Award-winning number “What A Fool Believes,” but also the premiere of “Open Your Eyes,” which was only performed on this tour.
Another highlight of the day was the diverse guest appearances. Co-writer Kenny Loggins appears on the aforementioned “What A Fool Believes,” and in addition to Loggins, violinist Novi Novog also appears on “Black Water.” Furthermore, Novog and Sal Valentino of BEAU BRUMMELS also appear on the final track, “Listen To The Music.”
Unlike the official “FAREWELL TOUR,” this is a full-length show in progress, exuding the mood of a huge hit and a drive for the future. This soundboard album will pour all of that into your brain. It’s a fresh sound that’s hard to believe has transcended 46 years of time and space. Please enjoy it to the fullest.
