Club Caprice, Redondo Beach, CA, USA 29th & 30th May 1999 STEREO SBD

In 1999, THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND released “THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND” and “OUT OF THE MADNESS,” and tour activities began in earnest. Here comes a soundboard album that will inject that upward momentum into your brain.

This work includes two consecutive performances at the same venue: “May 29th/30th, 1999 Redondo Beach Performance.” This is a stereo soundboard recording. THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND’s stage debut dates back to 1991, but their touring activities only began in earnest after the release of “OUT OF THE MADNESS.” This is a good opportunity to look back at their activities at the time and take a closer look at the position of this work.

[Newly discovered original DAT master directly connected to the mix desk]
This is Derek Trucks from 1998/1999. Previously, he performed a dozen or so live shows per year, but that number suddenly increased. In 1999, in particular, his performances swelled to roughly 80 shows, the same level as the current TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND. The Redondo Beach performance featured in this work took place at “North America #4,” marking the 40th and 41st performances. While these two shows were held consecutively, their meanings differ slightly: the “May 29th” performance was a full set, while the “May 30th” performance was the opening for JOHN MAYALL AND THE BLUESBREAKERS. This work is a two-disc set that combines both shows.

This work, which conveys these two performances, is a masterpiece directly connected to the mix table. In fact, the sound board for “May 29th” has been known for some time, but it was based on an incomplete master with several songs cut, and was incorrectly credited as “1994”. In contrast, this work is a masterpiece created directly from the original DAT recorded on the mix table.

The upgrade is overwhelming in terms of both quality and quantity. The “May 29th” edition is a complete version lasting about 87 minutes, and it is the ultimate gene with no sound or dubbing marks. Of course, the next day, “May 30th” was also excavated at the same time as the original DAT, and the quality is the same. It is a pleasure board where raw live performances are poured into the brain without processing or modification.

[A complete live album of two performances featuring a huge number of cover songs]
The Omoto Master sound depicts a scorching blues rock with a rich and varied repertoire. “THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND” and “OUT OF THE MADNESS” were also packed with a variety of cover songs, but the live performance expanded even further. Let’s summarize the two performances here.

●Album songs (5 songs + 5 songs)
・Derek Trucks Band: Naima [John Coltrane] / Mr. PC [John Coltrane] / 555 Lake (★) / Footprints [Wayne Shorter] / Egg 15
・Out of the Madness: Good Morning Little Schoolgirl [Sonny Boy Williamson] / Ain’t That Loving You [Bobby Bland] / Preachin’ Blues [Sun House] (★) / Alright] / 44 Blues [Roosevelt Sykes]
●Other (8 songs)
・Yield Not To Temptation [Bobby Bland] (★) / The Chicken [James Brown] / Rasta Man Chant / Tutu [Miles Davis] / Travelin’ South [Albert Collins] / Amazing Grace / Cissy Strut [THE METERS] / Afro-Blue [Mongo Santamaria]
*Note: [ ]The original artist is the one who covered it. “★” marks songs that are performed on both recordings.

…And so it goes. Only three songs overlapped between the two shows. Some of the songs were included on SOUL SERENADE, like “Rasta Man Chant” and “Afro-Blue,” but there were also a variety of other classic covers performed nonstop. The seeds of the ultimate live band that would become the current TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND were already beginning to emerge.

This is a superb live album that condenses and reduces “THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND” and “OUT OF THE MADNESS” and explodes with stage energy. Enjoy the entire two shows with the finest original DAT sound. Enjoy to your heart’s content.
