Furthermore, “GRAF ZEPPELIN” has polished it up, resulting in a live album that is the greatest masterpiece from the end of their second phase!!

This release permanently preserves the “Long Beach concert on April 15, 1973,” a masterpiece audience recording. This recording has been known since the 1990s and has been cherished as a storyteller that testifies to the final stages of the second phase of the North American tour. The definitive version of this recording was our previous release, “Darker Than Blue 272/273,” but this time, the original master was discovered through the prestigious “JEMS” Goldstein unearthing project. Along with the upgrade, the identity of the person who produced this legendary recording has also been revealed.

Barry Goldstein. A historically significant figure from Southern California, who began recording in the early 1970s and was also a close friend of the legendary taper “Mike the Mike” Millard. “JEMS” has been unearthing his master tapes and other materials, and following Rory Gallagher’s “Uxbridge 2275” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Uxbridge 2194,” which opened the night, recordings of headliner Deep Purple have also been discovered.

1973 was a transitional period between the second and third phases. First, let’s take a look at the overview of their activities at the time and confirm the position of this work.

【A glorious US tour held in the midst of a massive hit】
This was DEEP PURPLE in 1973. The massive success of “MADE IN JAPAN” brought them a breakthrough in America as well. The “North America” tour, which followed that momentum, can be said to be the very glory of the second phase. The Long Beach performance featured in this work is one part of that tour. Let’s take a closer look at the dates, also as we organize our store’s collection.

…and so on. When it comes to full recordings that convey the glorious “North America in 1973,” the four works mentioned above have been considered the definitive editions, and among them, the masterpiece has been said to be “DEFINITIVE BOSTON 1973 (Darker Than Blue 274/275).” However, the recent discovery of the original master has overturned that established theory. This work has shattered Boston’s stronghold and seized the title of “King of North America.” Moreover, it has risen to become one of the “two greatest masterpieces of the late second period,” alongside the recently released “”THE END” FINAL EDITION (Darker Than Blue 361/362)!”

[The ultimate sound thanks to the original master + meticulous mastering]
In fact, the sound is shocking. The previous master was good, but listening to it now, the balance was slightly skewed to the right channel, and fluctuations and high-frequency hiss noise due to the condition of the tape were sometimes noticeable. However, this new original master has none of those flaws. Since it’s the original mono recording itself, the soundstage is perfectly centered, without any bias or wavering, making for a completely different listening experience. The overall clarity is superb, and the realistic timbres of each instrument, from John’s keyboard solo to “Lazy,” are exquisite. Paice’s drumming, in particular, has such crisp hi-hats and other metallic sounds that it feels like he’s playing them right in front of you.

This album is the pinnacle version, further refined with “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering on the original, shocking master sound. Several missing parts in the original audio released online have been seamlessly patched in with existing commercially available audio, and the approximately three minutes of duplicate drum solo seen in the previous release has also been resolved. However, since Barry’s second master tape (containing approximately 30 minutes of the final show) remains missing, the section from the middle of “Space Truckin'” onwards is supplemented with the original master unearthed by “Krw_co”. The

recently released “THE END” FINAL EDITION from Osaka in the same year was not only the final night of the second phase, but also “the greatest masterpiece of 1973”. This album stands alongside that solitary masterpiece as “the greatest masterpiece of the overseas period”. What were the live performances of the second phase like, when they were on the verge of collapse despite achieving global success? This is the live album that you should start with to experience that. This album’s position is not simply that of an upgraded version.

This is a new masterpiece from the second phase of Deep Purple, recorded by a historical master, discovered by a renowned recording research company, and polished by a master master. This live album is a crystallization of the passion of men who dedicated their lives to 70s hard rock. Please enjoy it to the fullest on this timeless 2CD set.
