Description
Milwaukee Auditorium, Milwaukee, WI. USA 22nd February 1977 TRULY PERFECT SOUND
JEMS has become a treasure trove of rare classic rock recordings, and between February and March, three recordings from Bruce Springsteen’s 1977 tour were uploaded. The 1977 tour featured daily performances that were so intense they surpassed even the Darkness tour, and it is even more highly regarded among Springsteen enthusiasts than The Darkness tour.
However, unlike Darkness and the 1975 tour, no soundboard sound source has been excavated this year.
Instead, this tour has the advantage of having audience recordings that boast amazingly high recording quality, even when listening to them now. Our shop has also released all of the Boston performances at the end of the 1977 tour on press discs, and “LEGENDS FROM THE MUSIC HALL” and “ARE YOU READY FOR THE FINAL MOMENT?” have been extremely well-received, as they each contained undeniably superb sound quality and Springsteen’s upper performance exchanges.
However, what’s amazing about the ’77 tour is that the highest quality audience recordings aren’t limited to this day. There are some audience recordings boasting incredible quality even about a month back from the Boston days, but the sound images are so on-trend that they surpass even Boston, making them a very beloved sound source for enthusiasts. Fortunately, it’s these sound sources that JEM has uploaded this time. Of the three, the St. Louis Fox Theater on February 28th was previously released by our store and has recently reappeared as a gift item. (“WILD FOX EVENING”)
And this time, the release will be the best sound source of the live performance in Milwaukee on February 22nd. Of course, since it is an audience recording of such high quality, it has been released before, and if you are a enthusiast, you may remember the title “ACTION IN THE STREETS”.
Recently, a fan-made remaster of this album, “THE RETURN TO BOMBSCARE ARENA,” has been circulating online. The remaster, by a label called “Ev2,” has been touted on fan sites as a “dramatic improvement in sound quality,” but in reality, it’s merely a more over-compressed, louder version of the album.
However, this JEM sound source is based on the low generation master, and has achieved a dramatic improvement in sound quality in the true sense. It has a natural and warm sound quality that is completely different from “THE RETURN TO ~”, and it shows the difference from the superficial sound processing that is common in fan remasters.
Moreover, the three performances uploaded by JEMS, including this one, have an unusually on-sound image, but that’s because these sound sources were recorded with permission by Springsteen’s tour crew, so to speak, “official audience recordings.” Unfortunately, there is only a brief cut for changing the tape between “She’s The One” and “Rosalita,” but even with that, the exceptionally high quality is overwhelming.
The 1977 tour, which has earned Springsteen enthusiasts its reputation for its upbeat performances, some of which are said to surpass even the Darkness Tour, deserves a limited press CD release if it’s to be heard at this level of quality. Springsteen’s recording activities were frozen during this period due to a lawsuit with his manager, Mike Appel, and he plays the Animals cover “It’s My Life” with a heavy atmosphere, seemingly reflecting his limitations.
From there, the tension gradually rises to an upper level, and the long and intense “Backstreets” is already a spectacular performance! After all, it is a great pleasure for fans to be able to listen to the 1977 live performance with stunning clarity and sound image.
Finally, the bonus track includes a recording from Richfield on February 17th, uploaded by JEMS as the third official audience recording. This day is famous for the fact that former Ronette Ronnie Spector joined in and sang in the second half of the live performance, and was also included as a bonus on “THE RETURN TO BOMBSCARE ARENA.”
According to JEMS, the entire concert was not recorded on this day, and instead, it was combined with a separate recording of poor quality to create a complete version. This release also includes Ronnie Spector’s appearance, but the sound quality has been improved. The bonus track “Born To Run,” which was cut from the “The Return To…” bonus track, was also included, even though it was played immediately after her performance. The result is a truly enjoyable title, featuring only the finest recordings from 1977. The sound quality and performance are impeccable! Enjoy this superb recording.
