This was the era of Bob Dylan’s transformation into rock, as depicted in the film “A Complete Unknown.”
After releasing the masterpiece “Highway 61 Revisited,” which marked Dylan’s shift to electric guitar, at the end of August, he embarked on an extensive US live tour for three months until the end of the year.
The stage featured a groundbreaking two-part structure for the time, consisting of acoustic solo performances and band performances.
In the first part of the acoustic set, Dylan’s creative energy, which had already transcended the boundaries of protest songs, produced a steady stream of new songs, including “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Ruined City” which showcases Dylan’s brilliant poetry, and “Joanna’s Vision,” which was still unrecorded and working out as “Freeze Out.” The audience held their breath in the silence as they listened intently to Dylan’s unique style.
The second part featured a rock performance backed by R. Robertson, R. Danko, R. Manuel, and G. Hudson (drums), who would later become “The Band.”
This performance in San Francisco, California (December 12th), near the end of the tour, was a time when the band was in top form after three months.
The audio, recorded by poet Allen Ginsberg on tape, likely from a favorable position as someone involved with the event, has a close and stable sound image, realistically conveying the atmosphere of this historic live performance.
Detailed Japanese liner notes including the circumstances, anecdotes, and tracklist from that time.
