Recently, a film has been released that depicts Bob Dylan’s path to rock music. The film also brings the famous album “NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 1965,” which faithfully reproduces the historic 1965 stage performance, with some dramatization, back into the spotlight. This means that we hope for more releases of the Newport Folk Festivals from other years in which Dylan performed.
Dylan’s 1964 Newport performance in particular felt shrouded in mystery, and even the official masterpiece “THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR. LIVE AT THE NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 1963-1965,” which compiled footage of his past performances, spent less time in 1964 than in the years before and after. In the first place, the official release of a compilation of the 1964 stage probably wasn’t even on the cards.
However, the 1964 stage was an important one that showed the band’s leap from the previous year’s “protest folk new star” stage, with hits such as “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Chimes Of Freedom” being performed. The film also features scenes from 1964, including a duet with Joan Baez.
This time, a foreign researcher has released a compilation based on the audio from the aforementioned footage, as well as files compiling Dylan’s performance at Newport in 1964, which have previously seen the light of day in various separate forms.
Moreover, the entire work is recorded on a stereo sound board, while the maniacs have compiled both official and unofficial sound sources. In a sense, it is strange that such a good sound source exists, but the culmination of it was not made. The previous work “NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 1965” was also recorded in stereo, but this time it can be enjoyed with a full stereo sound board recording.
In addition, this release includes “It Ain’t Me Babe” from the first day at Newport, which was unearthed after the Mania production file. The song is famous for the duet version of the two, who went on stage with Baez at night and sang together, and a similar scene was depicted in the movie, but in fact Dylan also performed it alone on the stage of the folk song study group in the afternoon.
The lunchtime session was famous for “Mr. Tambourine Man,” introduced by Pete Seeger, which was also seen in the official video, but the new song that was shown before that was “It Ain’t Me Babe,” a newly discovered sound source from recent years that was recorded at the beginning of this song.
Dylan and Baez were at their closest in 1964, as evidenced by the amusing scenes where she not only sang duets with Dylan, but also imitated Dylan on stage, using her own song “Mary Hamilton” as a joke. Meanwhile, the film clearly includes a scene where the crowd sings “The Times They Are A-Changin'” in unison in Newport in 1964, but in fact the song was never sung in Newport in 1964.
And on the final day of the festival, Dylan’s stage was mostly made up of songs from “Another Side of Bob Dylan,” which was about to be released at the time. Although it was before the release at the time, it was a stage full of great songs, and the performance ended with “With God On Our Side,” which was performed to sing with Baez. The duet scene of the song was also incomplete in the official video mentioned at the beginning, but here the performance is recorded in its entirety with the best stereo soundboard recording.
As a bonus track fitting for this culmination of Newport’s 1964 album, we have included the oldest recording of “Mr. Tambourine Man.” This is from a private recording (hence the only one in mono) that was unearthed 10 years ago and caused a big stir. This is an extremely valuable recording that captures the original form of this song, which was impressively played at the end of the film.
More than the highly popular “NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 1965”, the full picture of the previous year’s stage, which enthusiasts were waiting for to be released, is full of famous songs and Joan Baez appears everywhere, just like the real version of this movie. And this time, you can listen to it quickly on one CD, and it’s also recorded on a stereo soundboard!
