In this history, this concert took place before the album was even released. In other words, even though the concert was held without anyone knowing their songs (new songs), word of mouth spread about the supergroup, and it is said that an audience of 100,000 people gathered at Hyde Park. The release video captures the entirety of that debut stage, so it captures the entire legendary debut stage. Those who have watched the video may have noticed that Clapton was not smiling at all in this stage video. This was not due to nervousness, but in a later interview, Clapton revealed that he was angry and bored when Ginger came to him with heroin, saying, “It’s the same as that mess at the end of Cream.” He also said that he was not satisfied with his own playing. On the album, Had To Cry Today had a novel twin lead guitar composition with Winwood, but for some reason, Winwood is playing it while sitting at the organ here. It seems that the new songs recorded in the studio had not yet been fully worked out for performance (Can’t Find My Way Home was arranged differently and played on the later outtake “Electric Version”). The inclusion of the Stones’ Under My Thumb and Traffic’s Means to an End in the set also suggests that the band was not yet complete. This is a valuable historical recording in every sense, capturing the precarious debut moment of such a supergroup. However, Do What You Like, which actually lasted 13 minutes, was cut and edited to just over 5 minutes because Ginger’s drum solo was considered redundant. As a bit of trivia, on top of Winwood’s electric piano was a model of the spaceship that the nude girl held on the cover of their only album (Winwood must have had high hopes for this band). This is a historical recording that any rock fan should definitely listen to.
