Description
Theatre 140, Schaerbeek, Brussels, Belgium 3rd October 1970 BEST & LONGEST VERSION * HUGE UPGRADE
What a shock… The best video of the veteran BLACK SABBATH has been significantly upgraded… No, this is not just an upgrade. The “original version,” which was not even rumored to exist, has been unexpectedly newly discovered. The most important historical work has been urgently released with the ultimate specification of permanent preservation press DVD + CD!
[Sabbath’s #1 Original Broadcast 16mm Film]
This most important footage is a multi-camera pro-shot from the “October 3, 1970 Brussels Concert.” Many people would rather call it “Paris 70.” While often mistaken for Paris throughout history, this footage reigns as the iconic “early Sabbath moment!” Not only has it spawned countless pre-releases since the VHS era, but it’s also been featured in official releases such as “The Black Sabbath Story, Vol. 1,” “Don’t Blame Me,” “Past Lives,” and the Super Deluxe Edition of “Paranoid,” making it a staple among classics…no, it’s the most classic footage ever.

This is truly the “No. 1 video in the entire history of BLACK SABBATH,” and this work is its pinnacle. Of course, there have been countless upgrades over the years, but this time it’s different. It’s fundamentally different from the past. In fact, what was previously known was the program “Rock of the Seventies” on Yorkshire-Tyne Tees Television in the UK. However, the original broadcast was not actually in the UK, but in Belgium, where the live performance took place. It was on the music program “Pop Shop” on the public broadcaster RTB. This work is the “Pop Shop” broadcast version. Moreover, it was digitized directly from the original 16mm film. The “original,” which had only previously been mentioned in documents, has finally seen the light of day.
[Longer than ever before, with record-breaking quality]
The shocking original version also differed in content. The full show was split into two broadcasts (January 21 and April 4, 1971; the former was also said to have been broadcast on January 28), and while the camerawork and structure were the same, the editing was different. It’s longer than previous Yorkshire TV versions. While the opening cleaning scene (Ozzy brushing his teeth with a deck brush) is about five seconds shorter than the Yorkshire TV version, the rest of the film is longer. While Yorkshire TV quickly switched to “Iron Man” after the conclusion of “Rat Salad” with a still image of the logo, this version was filmed exactly as it was on set, transitioning naturally from a 15-second shot of a realistic audience. Furthermore, the two broadcasts end without English announcements, with backstage footage extended by about 10 seconds each.

Being a historically significant footage, even a few seconds longer is a significant deal, but what’s even more shocking is the quality. The highest-quality master to date is the “The Ozzy Osbourne Years: Ultimate Edition” version, but this one is even more beautiful! The “Ultimate Edition” (even now) boasts visual beauty beyond the official release, but the skin texture is strangely smooth, as if smeared with foundation. It was still top-notch, and while it was thought that the quality of the footage was what it was supposed to be, it wasn’t. Ozzy in this film has rough, acne-like skin, and Iommi’s arm hair and the dirt on his finger cot are clearly visible.
Furthermore, there are no traces of dubbing, a fate that has been plaguing the broadcast up until now. While it’s natural to expect this, since it’s made from the original 16mm film, there’s also absolutely no tape warping or white line noise, which were common even in the “ULTIMATE EDITION.” The beauty and realism of the original film truly overflows onto the screen. In fact, there are some scenes in the second half of the show (the second of the two-part broadcast), which have a slightly reddish cast, but this isn’t degradation. The multi-camera cuts switch between normal and reddish colors, clearly demonstrating the original broadcast’s color palette (though it would be easy to correct the color, we’ve chosen to preserve it permanently, according to historical accuracy). Of course, the first half is entirely in normal color, and even in the second half, the reddish cast is only visible from certain angles.
[Also included is a live album with a stereo version of the impact soundboard]
The visual beauty is eye-opening, but the biggest upgrade is actually the audio. This is a completely different thing! While the highest peak in terms of visuals was the “ULTIMATE EDITION,” the pinnacle in terms of audio was the bonus CD included with the Super Deluxe Edition of the official “PARANOID.” However, this “POP SHOP” film easily surpasses even the official CD.

Above all, the mix is completely different. The sound of the UK Yorkshire TV version is flat and mono, as was the case with both “PAST LIVES” and the Super Delaedi version of “PARANOID.” While the “POP SHOP” broadcast version is also mono, it’s clear that the original was a stereo soundboard. The previously flat core now has a three-dimensional feel, the ensemble has depth, and you can fully enjoy the beautiful separation. This is pure speculation, but the original Belgian broadcast may have converted the stereo sound to mono, and UK Yorkshire TV may have remixed it to push the core out for mono. Furthermore, the freshness has been updated to the highest peak. Even the official Super Delaedi CD suffers from degradation in the latter half, creating a sense of distortion as if it were coming from an MP3. However, there is no such degradation in the “POP SHOP” film. The lustrous, three-dimensional sound remains unwavering throughout.
It would be a shame to leave such an impactful soundboard as just an accessory to a pro shot. We want you to appreciate the upgrade beyond the video… so we’ve included a soundtrack CD with the audio converted into a live album. Moreover, this isn’t just a drop in the sound, but a widened, pseudo-stereo sound. Since the original soundboard is a stereo mix, there’s no sense of incongruity in the sound space. Rather, the stereo sound at the time of filming must have been like this… it’s a convincing and natural live album. While the pro shot DVD is the star of this work, this live album itself is a soundboard album comparable to SABBATH’s greatest masterpiece, “DEFINITIVE MONTREUX 1970 (Zodiac 337).”
This is BLACK SABBATH’s most classic and most important pro-shot album. This is the ultimate quality version, digitized from the original 16mm film of “POP SHOP.” While the footage has undergone countless upgrades over the years, this is the original, and there’s nothing better. It’s truly a rock world heritage and one of BLACK SABBATH’s pinnacle works. Enjoy this historic, newly unearthed, permanently preserved DVD + CD anytime, anywhere.
★Until now it was a rebroadcast version from Yorkshire, UK, but this time it’s the original Belgian broadcast version (with some editing differences)
★This version is better in both picture and sound quality, with the sound being by far the best
★It’s great that there’s no white line noise, which was present in some parts of Black Sabbath, etc.
