BEAT MASTERS INTERNATIONAL – 3 CD LTD. EDITION IN FOLD OUT SLEEVE
Description
“Alternate Album Collection” series is an overseas original newly edited collection that thoroughly pursues Beatles original album-related sound sources based on the latest updates. A new reference collection that carefully selects a wide variety of interesting Beatles sound sources, from newly discovered previously unreleased tracks to original tracks. From the latest multi-track remixes to unreleased studio sessions and various versions, this collector’s edition series meticulously examines and reconstructs numerous previously unreleased and unearthed recordings that have been repeatedly updated over the years, focusing on sound quality and editing. It thoroughly pursues “alternative” recordings that cannot be heard through the limited publicly released material, resulting in a highly anticipated collector’s edition series with the latest editing.
Released in the UK on December 3, 1965, this is the Beatles’ sixth official original album. The double A-side single “We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper,” not included on the album, was released simultaneously and both reached number one on the UK charts. The album title originates from the slang term “plastic soul,” implying that their music was not authentic compared to Black music. The North American version, “Rubber Soul,” released by Capitol Records, features unique track selections and editing, as was the case with the UK album “Help!” The album “Yesterday and Today” includes four additional tracks: “Yume no Hito” and “It’s Only Love” from the original “Yume no Hito,” as well as “Drive My Car,” “Hitoribocchi no Aitsu,” “Koi wo Suru Nara,” and “Kieta Koi.” It’s a “folk-rock album” with a different feel from the UK version. It also uses a different master than the UK version, resulting in the so-called “false start” at the beginning of “Kimi wa Izukoe” and a different mix of “Ai no Kotoba.” The album “Rubber Soul” is considered the band’s first significant artistic achievement, greatly influencing the music scene at the time and pioneering the possibilities of pop music by broadening the range of lyrics and music. It is also highly regarded as the origin of later psychedelic and progressive rock, and served as a catalyst for a broad shift in direction from single-centered music to album production that consistently included high-quality songs. For the Beatles, this album marked a turning point, as they truly took the lead, making an artistic leap and evolving their recording techniques. By incorporating new instruments such as the sitar, harmonium, and fuzz bass, they enriched their expressiveness and arrangements, evolving from their early Merseybeat sound to the style of “Revolver” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
As part of the “Alternate Album Collection” series, “Rubber Soul” is released in two editions, “Rubber Soul: Sessions” and “Rubber Soul: Versions,” both as 3-CD sets. “Rubber Soul: Sessions” is a 3-CD set containing all 30 tracks of the “Multitrack New Remix Album” and all 60 tracks of “The Studio Recording Sessions.”
DISC1: MULTITRACK NEW REMIX ALBUM + SINGLES + INSTRUMENTALS
This disc features all 14 tracks from the original album, two singles not included on the album, and instrumental versions of all the album tracks, all newly remixed with multitrack editing. The first 14 tracks feature new stereo remixes that utilize AI technology to separate vocals and choruses, and reconstruct the multitracks of each instrument. These new mixes differ from previous official stereo mixes and remastered versions, notably clearly separating the lead vocals and chorus, and providing a clearer sound image for each instrument. The placement of guitars and drums is also different, making the difference in sound clearly discernible. In addition to the original 1960s stereo, this disc includes new remixes by George Martin, making their CD debut, and many other remastered and remixed versions, including newly updated stereo remixes that are making their first appearance. The instrumental section in the second half focuses on the Beatles’ performance itself on this album. It’s not simply the original with the vocals removed; the balance of each instrument and the stereo separation have been newly edited from the multi-track recordings, resulting in a truly original instrumental album.
DISC2: THE STUDIO RECORDING SESSIONS 1
DISC3: THE STUDIO RECORDING SESSIONS 2
This release features studio session recordings from October 12th to November 1965, tracing the album’s production process in roughly chronological order. It includes previously unreleased session recordings and other existing recordings that have not been included in official releases. In addition to the familiar previously released and official recordings, the latest updated editing has improved the sound quality, and many tracks that were previously only available in mono are now presented here in stereo for the first time. The tracks included here are demixes that continue to evolve with the latest updates, not just separating vocals and instruments, but also featuring multi-track stereo remixes where the vocals themselves have been individually extracted, and overdubbed choruses and instruments have also been individually separated. Iconic choral work in songs like “Nowhere Man,” “In My Life,” “If I Fall in Love,” “Words of Love,” “Think for Yourself,” “You Want to See Me,” and “Wait” features John, Paul, and George’s three-part harmonies separated individually, or mixes of John’s vocals alone or Paul’s vocals alone, resulting in unprecedented new sound sources. While such extracted audio has often been in mono in the past, it’s noteworthy that these are original stereo remixes with different editing and mixing. In terms of both the number of tracks and content, this is the latest updated best-of compilation.
