[Capitol Original Compilation Album “Rarities”]
The album “Rarities,” compiled by Capitol in 1980, was originally released as a bonus disc on the complete Beatles box set “The Beatles Collection,” featuring singles and EPs not featured on the albums. However, since many of the tracks were already included on albums in the original Capitol compilations and were not considered “rare” in the US, this compilation was released as a standalone Capitol compilation, similar to the 1960s, adding versions and mixes that were difficult to find in the US, in addition to the original album tracks. While it was not released in the UK, it is available in Japan, Australia, Canada, France, and other countries. This compilation album, which initially drew attention to the differences in versions and stereo/mono mixes around the world, never made it onto CD. While many tracks have now been released on CD in some form, it remains an essential reference album, not only for its stereo/mono differences but also for its differences in editing and separation between the UK and US versions of the same stereo version, as well as for its unique analog sound, which differs from the unified digital remaster. The trumpet ending of “Penny Lane” and the mixed mix of “I Am the Walrus” are unique recordings, and the UK stereo mixes of “There’s a Place” and “Misery,” which were not included on the US album, also showcase the unique sonic differences of the analog era. This CD release not only features a complete reissue of the original vinyl, but also includes 14 tracks (15 tracks) from the original vinyl, as well as 13 unique tracks from around the world, which are rare in the US, in keeping with the album’s concept. This CD release features the Australian stereo mix of “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” the hi-hat opening of “All My Loving,” the 1960s Japanese-exclusive stereo mix of “I’m Down,” the German real stereo version of “Strawberry Fields Forever,” and the UK-exclusive “Tomorrow Never Knows” (Mix 1), all carefully crafted from the original vinyl. The subtle sonic differences inherent in analog are faithfully reproduced. CD 2 features a selection of “US Capitol Unique Mixes,” unique mixes from the 1960s. While
most of the stereo and mono tracks on the official “THE USA LBUMS” box set were replaced with remastered versions in 2009, the pseudo-stereo and unique mixes from the 1960s are no longer available. This release features all 28 tracks, carefully crafted from the original vinyl masters. This album contains a collection of unique Capitol mixes, including tracks that have never been released on official CD, such as “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “I Am the Walrus,” and “Baby Your Rich Man.”
