The definitive edition of the film “LET IT BE” has finally been released on DVD by Merseyside, featuring a newly restored, ultra-high definition version with video and audio faithful to the original release! Enjoy the original cut, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, in perfect picture and sound quality!
After many twists and turns, the Beatles film “Let It Be” was finally released as a restored version for streaming last year. However, it has yet to be released as a digital disc. Its availability has not been widespread, and it is far from being easily accessible. In fact, there may be more people who have not seen the restored version, or who cannot watch it.
But that’s not all. Since it’s called a “restored version,” it’s only natural that there will be some differences, big or small, from the original state in 1970. Fans around the world were thrilled when the long-awaited release of the final Beatles film finally came to fruition, but soon discovered some differences from the familiar “LET IT BE.” In fact, there were probably quite a few parts that even felt strange.
It’s true that the picture quality of the version released last year was excellent, and it was definitely worth the wait. However, for the reasons mentioned above, it’s true that there were some parts where the audio was altered, or even worsened. So, it would be perfect if a DVD version could be made that takes advantage of the excellent picture quality of the restored version while still being as close to the original audio as possible… and this release will fulfill the wishes of all movie enthusiasts!
There were plenty of things to criticize about the restored version released last year, but the first and most obvious incongruity was the sudden shift from Paul’s piano performance at the beginning to “Don’t Let Me Down” during a band rehearsal. In the restored version, a different take was overlaid here, which would have been a real turnoff for fans accustomed to the traditional “LET IT BE” album. While the audio itself was clear, John’s singing was completely different.
Furthermore, in the scene where George gets electrocuted, the line where he jokes, “I was saved by my rubber shoes,” was replaced, and in the scene where John says, “That was ‘Can You Dig It’ by Georgie Wood” after playing “Dig It,” Ringo appears to fall off the drum throne (chair), but in this scene, the rumbling sound of casters rolling was added, making for some incomprehensible changes. There’s no such thing as a drum throne with casters. This is a typical example of the “deterioration” seen in last year’s restored version.
For this release, the audio has been thoroughly restored to be faithful to the original, focusing on the Twickenham Studios scenes, using the audio from the Ron Furmanek version, a familiar name at HMC, which was completed in 1992 but never released, as well as Nagra reels from the film crew, which are well-known to film enthusiasts.
This also restores the audio for “Don’t Let Me Down,” which previously sounded very out of place. John’s loose singing style is the true essence of the film “Let It Be.” And yet, the sound quality is so clear it’s incomparable to versions broadcast on television or the 1981 North American VHS/LD versions, perfectly balanced with the picture quality. Plus, subtitles are included, making it a safe and enjoyable experience.
As for the rooftop scene, the noisy sounds heard in the background of the cityscapes projected between performances was a major obstacle to restoration, and even in the 1992 version, it had already deteriorated to a completely different state. In last year’s restored version, this had deteriorated even further to a state where only other ambient sounds were ringing out, but this time, the original software was used to restore the sound to its original state by reusing the audio from the legendary American laserdisc.
The biggest flaw in last year’s restored version was the drastically altered ending, with “Oh! Darling” playing. This time, the familiar “THE END” credits have been recreated from scratch, exactly like the original, to recreate the original’s startling ending. Of course, “Get Back (Reprise)” plays in the background. After all, this is the best way for the movie “LET IT BE” to end. The ending in the streaming version showed no respect for the original edited version, and was a disappointing change that really ruined the quality of the original.
This completes the film’s restoration, meticulously restoring it to its original state. The first disc features a widescreen version that replicates the theatrical release’s European Vista aspect ratio, while the second disc features the original film’s 4:3 open-matte fullscreen version, completing the entire experience. This eliminates the many incongruities felt with last year’s digital release, while still satisfying those who prefer to enjoy footage with no top or bottom cutoffs. Enjoy a wonderful New Year’s holiday with the original “Relive,” recorded in the best possible quality in both picture and sound! A must-have collector’s edition for every household!
This is a unique restored version of the 2024 distribution remaster, which has been significantly modified to conform to the original 1970 version.
Disc 1 is a widescreen version that recreates the theatrical release, while Disc 2 is a 4:3 open-matte fullscreen version.
All of the edits made in the 2024 Peter Jackson restoration have been restored to the original editing.
The Twickenham scene has been replaced with audio from the 1992 Ron Furmanek restoration and Nagra reel sound source .
The sound effects (city noise) between songs in the Rooftop Live recording are different from the original, so they have been patched with the 1981 North American LD sound source. The ending,
Get Back (Reprise), has been restored.
