A few months ago, The Beatles’ 1963 Bournemouth performance surprised enthusiasts around the world. The existence of this recording had also been confirmed for some time, and as soon as the HMC label finally announced its release this year, the owner of the recording released it online, just like Essen 66. However, the condition of the recording was different in the case of Bournemouth.
The online version seemed to have a poor compatibility with the old reel and the deck that played it, and there was a periodic, harsh noise called “reel whine” from “Chains”. On the other hand, there was no such noise on the HMC, but this time the sound quality itself was poor and the low pitch was left unattended… It was an unexpected state. Thus, each of the two versions that appeared had some kind of problem. Despite this, the CD-R “BOURNEMOUTH & WALTHAMSTOW 1963”, which was the earliest release of the online version, was a huge hit.
So, for the limited press CD release from Merseyside, the annoying “reel whine” noise, which was the biggest problem with the net version, which has better sound quality, has been thoroughly eliminated. When the two Bournemouth versions appeared two months ago, enthusiasts lamented that if there was no noise in the sound quality of the net version, there would be no complaints… but finally that wish will be fulfilled by “reel whine” Beatles specialist Merseyside. Of course, the slow pitch is also adjusted properly.
This precious recording is different from the so-called audience recordings made from the audience seats. It was recorded by a theater staff member near the stage for a fan friend. If it was recorded from the audience seats, the screams of the fans would have been louder, if not louder than in later years. Such circumstances were hidden behind the fact that the performance was surprisingly loud and easy to hear, even though it was recorded in 1963.
And the set list was so interesting. It started with “Thank You Girl” where Paul greets the audience while the intro starts, and George sang two songs, which was really surprising. The friendly atmosphere, especially the applause that erupted during his song “Chains”, was very pleasant.
August 1963 was just a few months away from the birth of Beatlemania, but at this point it was still peaceful. Thanks to this, it was at this time that the repertoire of gentle songs such as “A Taste Of Honey” and “Baby It’s You” was performed.
Next is a recording from the tour with Roy Orbison in May, which was unearthed at the same time as Bournemouth and caused a stir. This was also previously put up for auction and its existence was confirmed. Since it was a joint tour, the Beatles’ performance time was short, but it is a valuable audience recording that captures “Some Other Guy” and “Please Please Me”, which cannot be heard in Bournemouth, as well as Orbison’s stage. Of course, the high pitch was adjusted.
Both recordings are not just valuable historical finds, but are surprisingly easy to listen to for audience recordings from 1963. And yet, because they contain the precious repertoire and arrangements mentioned above, a new release with unnecessary noise and pitch errors corrected was urgently needed for enthusiasts around the world.
And as a bonus, it includes a remastered soundboard recording of the album’s big hit commemorative live performance at EMI, which was also unearthed a few years ago and caused a big stir. At the time it was released on a gift CD-R, but this time it has been recorded with the sound quality, which was a bit muffled, made easier to hear. It also includes a super rare recording of an in-house live performance that is different from a normal live performance, and as a “Definitive Edition”, it is a bargain that compiles the precious and newly excavated live recordings of The Beatles in 1963 in the best condition!
