Description

Includes a new 2025 reconstructed version and a stereo mix of the SMiLE Sessions version.
The 2025 latest remix stereo version of the most famous unfinished album in rock history, “SMiLE,” which is said to have been a masterpiece on par with Sgt. Pepper if it had been released in 1967, will be released this summer! “SMiLE: 1988 MARK LINNETT ROUGH MIXES COMPILATION,” which contains Smile from a time that is too nostalgic for enthusiasts, was a mono mixed version by Mark Linnett, so this time we have also prepared a super clear version of Smile that you can listen to in full stereo!
At the end of the century, the Yellow Dog-affiliated Sea Of Tunes label released the UNSURPASSED MASTERS box set, which greatly expanded Smile’s studio session recordings, which had previously only been the tip of the iceberg. This, combined with the sudden widespread use of music editing on computers, led to a frenzy of activity in the early 21st century as fans tried to compile their own “unfinished Smile” albums.
However, with the release of Brian Wilson’s solo album “BRIAN WILSON PRESENTS SMiLE” in 2004, and the Beach Boys’ official album “THE SMiLE SESSIONS” in 2011, the fan-made SMiLE crumbled away. The Purple Chick version of SMILE from 2005, which was the only one to feature Brian’s version and drew attention for its bold research, became the final version of the fan-made “SMiLE” series.
Twenty years have passed since the release of the Purple Chick version of Smile, and that version, which was created using only the sound sources available at the time, is now undeniably outdated. Therefore, the enthusiast who provided the sound sources for the highly acclaimed “PET SOUNDS: UNPROCESSED STEREO & REEL TO REEL MONO” has used his own cutting-edge technology to create a new, reconstructed version of “SMiLE” based on the same concept as the Purple Chick version of Smile.
The detailed work involved using multiple sound sources for each song to achieve a rich stereo feeling. It took five years of repeated redoing to complete the final master, and Brian’s Smile production process was the result of an astonishingly detailed process.
While the original 60’s stereo mixes such as “Our Prayer” and “Cabin Essence” remain the same, “Child Is Father Of The Man” is stereoized by shifting the 1988 Mark Linet mix and the 2011 mono mix to the left and right, and “Surf’s Up” is a hybrid of the 2011 mix in the first half and the 1971 mix in the second half. And “I’m In Great Shape” has always been difficult to build Smile. The part was abandoned before the official vocal part was recorded in the studio, and the only song that exists is Brian’s piano demo. The technique of combining them has been around for 20 years, and even “SMiLE SESSIONS” was unnatural in the end. However, this time, just like Brian’s version of “SMiLE,” “Heroes and Villains: Cantina” is placed in the intro, and the studio-recorded backing and demo vocals are beautifully combined to create a complete work. It has finally been reborn as a complete part of the Smile Suite.
And Smile’s most difficult song, “Good Vibrations,” was a song that they lost the session tape of the vocal track and could not make a stereo version of. This time, they combined the AI-separated stereo mixes made by both the official and fan-made versions in recent years to create a stereo version that has never been seen before. The separation of the ending in particular is captivatingly vivid.
Furthermore, the second disc contains a version of Stereo Smile that was released in 2023 by a fan using AI separation software. The concept of this disc is to convert the mono version included on Disc 1 of the official 2011 “SMiLE SESSIONS” into a complete stereo version of all songs by combining the 2011 stereo session sound source, the stereo mix that was released bit by bit on the 2013 compilation album “MADE IN CALIFORNIA”, and AI separation of the mono mix. This is a stereo version that faithfully reproduces the track order, timing between songs, and composition of the official “SMiLE SESSIONS”, so the finished product is completely different from the first disc.
For example, “Cabin Essence” is a completely different stereo mix that can be enjoyed by extracting only the vocals from “20/20” through AI separation and combining them with the backing tracks of “SMiLE SESSIONS”. “Good Vibrations” is also finished based on the stereo version of “SMILEY SMILE”, so this is also completely different from Disc 1. Above all, it seems that “SMiLE SESSIONS” was made by taking Brian’s design and putting the smile parts into mono, but since stereo smiles were possible even at that point, there were many enthusiasts who felt that it was not enough. The dissatisfaction with the official version is finally resolved with this title!
Both of the Smile albums recorded on two discs this time are based on the composition of Brian’s version of Smile, making the phantom symphony album easy to understand. The natural sound spread and clarity of each album can be heard through speakers or listened to carefully with headphones. Please enjoy this luxurious two-disc set of Smile in full stereo, which cannot be achieved officially!
