★Must-see!! Rare, legendary footage unearthed in the highest quality!!
Footage from the 1979 “MIDNIGHT SPECIAL” featuring Brian May as the main guest has finally surfaced! This appearance was partly to promote their latest album, “LA (Light Album),” which was released at the time.
True to their Beach Boys style, they started with “Good Vibrations,” and what’s more, they were treated like a major act, with the entire live formation, including the support members, participating in the recording.
However, what they really wanted to promote was their new album. Plus, the music scene at the time was in the midst of a disco craze, so they wanted to perform a disco remake of “Here Comes The Night” from their “LA (Light Album)”…but since they hadn’t planned to play this version live, they simply lip-synced. Moreover, Brian seemed to have nothing to do and stayed backstage, while Dennis only half-heartedly tapped the cymbal.
Even more interesting is “Angel Come Home,” a track from the new album. It’s an extremely rare moment where Dennis sings live, but since it wasn’t planned to be performed live, he’s lip-syncing, and Al Jardine doesn’t even have a guitar, instead miming backing vocals with a tambourine—a truly rare formation.
Although it was lip-synced, this rare footage of Dennis at the front had been available on YouTube before, but now it can be viewed in a much clearer picture quality.
The Beach Boys’ performance alone is full of highlights, but the other performers are also incredibly impressive. McGuinn, Clark & Hillman, whose performance was essentially a Byrds reunion, performed not only their hit “Don’t You Write Her Off” but also “Surrender to Me” and “Backstage Pass,” with all three members’ songs performed equally and with live instrumentation, which is a rare treat.

McGuinn also joined the Beach Boys on stage to perform “Rock ‘n’ Roll Music,” and here, even the host Wolfman Jack joined in, and Brian played bass, creating another rare and captivating moment.
What makes this episode even more interesting is that the other performers are the disco group Tavares and Blondie, two groups at opposite ends of the spectrum. As expected, it was a separate recording with no interaction with the Beach Boys, but Deborah Harry’s confident stage presence, including her signature “Heart of Glass,” and her frequent direct eye contact with the camera, showcases her peak popularity.
Two songs by Bad Company were interspersed throughout these live scenes. Both were live promotional films from the release of “DESOLATION ANGELS” and not recorded for the program, but “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy” did indeed include Carl’s introduction before the video was shown.
As you can see, this broadcast is packed with rare footage of the Beach Boys alone, capturing the presence of Brian and Dennis. On top of that, it features McGuinn, Clark & Hillman, Bad Company, and even Blondie, making it a truly star-studded episode that you can enjoy in perfect picture quality.
