1971, Badfinger released their third album “Straight Up” on the Beatles’ Apple label. This album, which is considered the best work of the band’s career, includes the band’s biggest hit single “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue,” which has been re-evaluated as a power pop masterpiece, as well as Leon Russell and Al Cooper. Initially, production began with Geoff Emerick producing, but since the band also participated in “All Things Must Pass” and the Concert for Bangladesh during this period, it was re-produced by George Harrison, but before it was completed, Todd Rundgren took over and it was released with a different selection of songs than the original. The album was released after such twists and turns, but the re-production resulted in a collection of great songs, and it became the best-selling album of the Apple era, including single hits, and is considered Badfinger’s masterpiece. The original version was out of print since the 1970s and has been difficult to obtain, and Beatles collectors have been paying attention to it, and it has been long awaited to be reissued, but it was finally released on CD for the first time in 1992, and a CD with different content was released in 2010, but it is now out of print. This special edition is the latest compilation edition that collectors will be interested in, which includes not only the original sound source of the album, but also a complete reproduction of the unfinished album in the early stages, as well as additional related sound sources such as demos and rough mixes. The first CD is the original album, which has never been released before, made into a CD with the highest quality sound source from the original analog master, which is faithful to the original sound. Unlike the digitally remastered sound sources that have been made into CDs so far, the analog sound source, which has been completely removed from the master record, has a natural sound of a different dimension from the previous CDs, and the difference is clear when compared to listening to it. The rich sound range unique to analog is recorded with a comfortable and supreme sound. The second half, “Studio Live Tracks: Stereo Remaster,” includes studio live performances from Granada TV’s “Set of Six” in 1972 and Canada TV’s “Rollin’ on the River,” which are familiar to collectors from the video. In particular, “Set of Six” is a wonderful live version from the album, and is recorded with a stereo remastered sound source that has been significantly upgraded from the original mono sound source. This is a must-listen live recording that was recorded in the highest quality for the first time. The first 12 songs on the second CD are the “pre-production master” that perfectly reproduces the unfinished album that Geoff Emerick was in charge of in the early stages. The content, which is composed of original unreleased songs and early versions, is a must-see as a prototype of “Straight Up” with different song selections and song orders. The second half of the “Extra Tracks” also includes related sound sources such as valuable demos and rough mixes. The hidden masterpiece “Name of the Game” has a magnificent unreleased version with Al Cooper’s organ added, and the newly upgraded remastered sound sources are compiled compared to the previous releases. The latest edited 2-CD memorial special edition from the GOLDIES label as a tribute to Badfinger, whose members all passed away in their heyday due to the death of Joey Molland in March 2025! Memorial release!
