Japanese TV Documentary 1974
A Riveting And Emotionally Gripping Saga: Japanese LD

A long-awaited documentary that is truly worthy of being called the “Holy Grail” for Badfinger enthusiasts around the world has finally been unearthed.

Moreover, it was a program that was produced in Japan and broadcast only in Japan. It was a documentary titled “Batfinger: The Young People of the Beatles Kingdom.” It was broadcast in 1974 and has been considered a phantom program among Badfinger enthusiasts.
However, in the 1980s, local stations suddenly rebroadcast the show without warning, and in the early hours of the morning. A nerd noticed this and managed to record only half of the show, and a version of the show was in circulation for many years.
Since then, the existence of the show has been virtually lost, but in the 21st century, when an American cable TV station aired a documentary about Badfinger, a clear version of the show appeared in fragments. This confirmed that the master of the show exists overseas, just like the situation with The Beatles’ July 1st concert at Budokan.
After that, a high-quality version of “Shine On” was released on YouTube, and it was confirmed that the complete version still exists, but there was no progress after that… Then, this month, Pete Ham’s YouTube suddenly released the complete master version, causing a stir among enthusiasts around the world.
First of all, the picture quality is amazing. The picture quality is super clear, on a different level from the early morning recording version that many enthusiasts have been using. And yet, I was surprised that I could watch the entire program.
While the show itself is about Badfinger, the main focus is on the events leading up to the celebration of the remarriage of their manager, Bill Collins. It’s a kind of “wedding of the world” type of show. And yet there are plenty of scenes that will have fans on their toes.
From the beginning of the program, the recording scene of the 1973 BBC live performance familiar from the official CD (the venue is the Paris Theater!) will appear, followed by the rehearsal scene of the new song “Shine On” with perfect image quality.
In addition, like a documentary, the film touches on the private lives of each member, and the wives of the members look young. The wives of Tom and Joey are particularly impressive. And finally, the scene of a dandy Pete with a mustache composing “Apple Of My Eye” in the summer of 1973 is perfectly shot!
Since it was first broadcast in 1974, the atmosphere of Showa-era Japan that permeates the show is very tasteful, and it’s amusing to hear the narrator constantly refer to him as “Badfinger.”
The best part is the coupling of the Japanese LD version of the famous documentary “Emotional Saga,” which was released on DVD earlier and was very well received. This is the ultimate combination of Badfinger’s real-time documentary and an anthology made after the band broke up. What’s more, since it’s the Japanese version, it comes with subtitles, and “Young People in the Kingdom of the Beatles” has Japanese narration, so it’s perfect for us.
I’ve been so grateful to watch even the short version of this legendary Badfinger documentary until now, but to be able to see it in such a complete form…this is a truly moving discovery!
