★★So amazing it’s mind-blowing…A must-listen!!
…This is incredible. Something truly amazing has happened. KISS’s greatest masterpiece, ‘ALIVE!’, that legendary live album has been reborn in a “100% raw version” with absolutely no overdubs. Moreover, the sound quality is completely official-grade. This truly super-classic title is being released urgently as a permanent-preservation 2CD set!!
As you know, 1975’s “ALIVE!” propelled KISS to superstardom overnight and is a brilliant masterpiece that shines brightly in rock history. While its amazing content spread KISS’s appeal all over the world, it also became widely known that the official version was a “manufactured live album” with extensive studio overdubs and replacements. So, what kind of album would it have been if it had been a raw, unadulterated live performance before all that “makeup” was added? —This album is the realization of that “fan’s dream.”
[Another ALIVE! created by a renowned professional engineer]
This release is actually unprocessed and unedited soundboard recordings collected from various performances recorded for ‘ALIVE!’. Up until now, our store has delivered raw soundboard recordings from each performance that formed the basis of the official ‘ALIVE!’, including ‘DEFINITIVE DETROIT 1975’, ‘CLEVELAND 1975 THE LOST KISS ALIVE!’, ‘THE COMPLETE DAVENPORT 1975’, and ‘DEFINITIVE WILDWOOD 1975’. These are raw performances before any overdubs were applied. However, these were merely “raw materials” for each individual performance. This release is the culmination of the series, meticulously rearranging those materials according to the setlist of the official ‘ALIVE!’, and finally completing them as “one album”.
This might sound like a collection of disparate materials rearranged chronologically, but that’s not the case. This work was produced by the same person who created “ROCK AND ROLL OVER REMIX” and “A WORLD WITHOUT HEROES Expanded ELDER Redux.” He’s a true professional engineer with many years of experience working on musicals. Anyone who has experienced those two works will immediately understand, but the meticulous craftsmanship ensures that the tone, balance, and timing are all perfect. Even though each performance’s live soundboard recording must have a different feel and nuance, it’s transformed into a cohesive “album” with a single, continuous flow, as if it had been that way from the beginning.
In fact, this album builds upon the track order and structure that made the official “ALIVE!” such a masterpiece, using only live performances before any overdubs are added, yet it still maintains a sense of unity. While it’s a completely different mix from the official version, it undeniably sounds like a “completed ALIVE!”. This is the true meaning behind the album’s title, “THE ALTERNATE ALIVE!”.
[The 100% live performance version of ALIVE! before the overdubs]
This album can be broadly divided into two types of tracks. One is the collection of timeless classics that were also included in the official ‘ALIVE!’ album. “All the songs on DISC 1” correspond to the A/B sides of the original ‘ALIVE!’ analog record. And “tracks 5-11 on DISC 2” correspond to the C/D sides of the analog record. This part has the same track order as the original ‘ALIVE!’ and is a collection of classic songs that are etched into your memory.
Of course, each song features a live performance before any overdubs were added. It’s raw, unpolished, and sometimes imperfect. But that’s precisely why it’s ferocious, thrilling, and resonates with such raw energy. It speaks volumes about just how passionate KISS was before the magic of the studio. Many of you may have experienced raw soundboard recordings with our selection of classic albums, but the impact they have when heard within the context of the album’s flow is completely different.
[The phantom songs that complete the original setlist]
And the remaining “tracks 1-4 on DISC 2” and the final “track 12 on DISC 2” make up another section. As you can see from the tracklist below, the songs placed here are repertoire that didn’t make it into the official ‘ALIVE!’. They have been neatly incorporated into their original positions in the setlist. Of course, each song has been carefully selected and polished to perfection. Let’s take a look at each song individually.
● This is an extremely rare song that was only performed a few times during the “Room Service” (Davenport) tour. While it was an instrumental during soundchecks, here you can enjoy it in its one-of-a-kind form with vocals.
● “Strange Ways” (Davenport):
This track features Peter Criss’s original vocals, recorded from the soundcheck where Gene was singing.
● “Two Timer” (Detroit)
This is an extremely rare song that was only performed at this Detroit concert in the 1970s.
● “Let Me Know” (Detroit):
This is a song with a story behind it, as it was recorded at Cobo Hall as a candidate for inclusion on ‘ALIVE!’ but was ultimately cut from the tracklist at the last minute.
● “Ladies In Waiting” (Detroit)
is included as a bonus track at the end of DISC 2. It remains a mystery whether this song was performed on the “DRESSED TO KILL Tour” or exclusively for the “ALIVE!” tour.
The way these tracks are seamlessly integrated between the regular songs elevates this album beyond simply being “another ALIVE!”, becoming a complete blueprint that recreates the entire repertoire of the “DRESSED TO KILL Tour,” the origin of KISS’s breakthrough, in soundboard quality.
If the individual concert soundboard albums we’ve introduced so far are “raw recordings of the live performances,” then this album is a “work of art” that brings them together, polishes them, and reconstructs them. It’s “ALIVE! as it should be,” put together by a professional engineer who has worked on numerous acclaimed releases. Who would have thought that such different emotions could arise from the same source material? The raw, unadulterated KISS, the legendary tracks played off the album, and a complete overview of the Breakthrough Tour. All of this crystallizes into a single live album on this two-disc set. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content with this permanently preserved 2CD set!!
