It shows the road leading up to the album, including a rare interview in Japan with Bruce Kulick, footage from the filming of the music video for the album’s first hit single, the classic Hide Your Heart, as well as excellent interviews and special reports that will bring great joy to fans.
The hugely popular KISS’s treasure trove of rare footage series, ‘KISSTORY’, returns with its 18th installment, venturing into Eric Carr’s final ‘HOT IN THE SHADE’ era! This time, Part 1 and Part 2 will be released simultaneously!!
This series is essentially a look at KISS’s untold history. It’s a compilation of rare footage, including little-known TV appearances, forgotten commercials, valuable interviews, film clips, and more—all gathered in the best masters. We’ve archived 17 works from their makeup era to “Crazy Nights,” and this latest installment finally delves into the last year of the 80s. First, let’s start with the usual series overview.
●Makeup Era
・VOLUME 1-5: 1974-1979 (Golden Age)
・VOLUME 6-8: 1980 (UNMASKED Era)
・VOLUME 9: 1981/1982 (THE ELDER Era)
・VOLUME 10-12: 1982/1983 (CREATURES OF THE NIGHT Era)
●No Makeup Era
・VOLUME 13: 1983/1984 (LICK IT UP era)
・VOLUME 14: 1984/1985 (ANIMALIZE era)
・VOLUME 15: 1985/1986 (ASYLUM era)
・VOLUME 16-17: 1987/1988 (CRAZY NIGHTS era)
*VOLUME 18: 1989 (HOT IN THE SHADE era part 1) ←★This work★
*VOLUME 19: 1990 (HOT IN THE SHADE Era Part 2)
In the previous work, “KISSTORY 17 (Shades 2644),” we traced the media frenzy of 1988, from the pro-shot live performance of MONSTERS OF ROCK to the spectacular collaboration with Willie Nelson, but this work heads towards the finale of the 80s. We follow KISS in 1989, leading up to the album “HOT IN THE SHADE.” Rare interviews in Japan, making-of footage with all takes of their first single “Hide Your Heart” included, set visit footage for “Rise To It,” and even hilarious footage of their MTV guest VJ appearances—all compiled into a 2-disc set of approximately 114 minutes. It is also a companion work to the “HOT IN THE SHADE” recording session CD released the same week. So, let’s introduce each disc.
●DISC 1: Chapter 1-2 “Japanese TV Appearances (2 types)”
DISC 1 starts with two valuable Japanese TV specials.
The first is “Pure Rock” from “February 1, 1989”. This program was actually included in the previous album “KISSTORY 17”, but this version is a different, even more beautiful master that was discovered later. After verification, the program’s date was also changed to “February 1989”. It’s a rare video featuring an interview with Gene Simmons, who came to Japan to promote “SIMMONS RECORDS” and HOUSE OF LORDS, and it was recorded at the earliest possible time before the release of “HITS”.
The second one is also “Pure Rock,” and this is the first time it’s been featured on Bootleg, recorded on September 5, 1989. Bruce Kulick appeared when he came to Japan to promote “HITS,” and footage of him on TV alone is extremely rare, and he also talks about Gene’s son Nicholas’s tongue (?). Both are Japanese programs, so the English commentary is fully subtitled in Japanese.
■DISC 1: Chapter 3-16 “Hide Your Heart: PV Making (14 types)”
This is the main part of DISC 1. A special feature on the making of the “Hide Your Heart” PV, filmed on September 23, 1989 in Los Angeles (Watts district)! It is included in its complete version, including all previously unreleased takes.
The music video for the first single and signature song from the album “HOT IN THE SHADE” was filmed in the Watts district, known for its high crime rate. The video is a rush of incredibly diverse footage. It includes outtakes, scenes from the set, takes interrupted by Gene’s antics (takes 6 & 7), takes featuring only Eric and Gene (take 8), footage from Gene’s camera (take 9) and Paul’s camera (takes 11-13), camera breaks, glimpses of makeup and hair touch-ups, and even daytime shootings of Tito and Rosa, and much more… It’s a true treasure trove of footage that will make you marvel at how such material survived.
And the grand finale is the unedited version of “Hide Your Heart” that never aired on MTV. It’s interesting to watch it again with the knowledge of how the final product was edited, and even just watching it is enjoyable, as it feels like you’re endlessly present at the raw filming location. This video, which deconstructs a single music video to this extent, is one of the most voluminous in the series.

■DISC 2: Chapter 1 “Hide Your Heart: Complete PV”
DISC 2 replaces DISC 1 and begins with the final footage from DISC 1. It contains the official PV (censored version) of “Hide Your Heart” taken from the record company’s internal master VHS. After watching all the takes on DISC 1, you’ll really appreciate the skillful editing of the finished product.
●DISC 2: Chapter 2 “CNN Entertainment News”
Next is a news reel from CNN’s “Entertainment News.” This news footage reports on the release of “HITS,” showing the transition from their 70s makeup look to their no-makeup look, interspersed with the new song’s PV, and includes exclusive interviews. It’s excellent material that gives insight into how the media reported on KISS at the time.
■DISC 2: Chapter 3-7 “Making of Rise To It (5 types)”
From here on is a collection of footage related to another single, “Rise To It.” While the “Hide Your Heart” video on DISC 1 was entirely made up of raw footage from the filming location, this video was produced in a documentary style.
Four TV programs will be released in quick succession: a behind-the-scenes report from “Hard & Heavy Magazine,” an interview with Gene and Paul on “Teen Talk” hosted by actor Malcolm Jamal Warner, a visit to the “Inside Music” set, and a solo interview with Paul Stanley. All of them were filmed on the set of “Rise To It,” and you can also see full takes of the band performing.
And finally, Chapter 7 is the completed version of the “Rise To It” music video. This was also recorded from the record company’s in-house master VHS. This collection of videos is a counterpart to the “Hide Your Heart” section on DISC 1.
●DISC 2: Chapter 8 “MTV Hard 30”
The finale of this work is the 1989 MTV program “Hard 30”. This is the full episode in which Paul and Gene appear as guest VJs to introduce music videos. MTV guest VJ footage is a familiar sight in the series, but in this work too, the two are so comfortable on TV that you wouldn’t think they were musicians, and they are really getting into it. This video shows the close relationship between MTV and KISS in the late 80s.
