Description
A rare recording of a high-quality stereo audience recording of a New Jersey club gig from 1989, led by Odd Balls!
Johnny led his final band, the Oddballs, which saw numerous lineup changes, including Jamie on saxophone and Alison on backing vocals, on April 14, 1989, at Murphy’s Row, a club in Long Beach, New Jersey. This rare recording features a high-quality stereo audience recording! Captured from the Low Generator master, the recording offers a wide range, well-balanced vocals, and a powerful sound with Johnny’s guitar thumping loudly, resulting in exceptionally clear sound quality that is considered top-notch for the time. Johnny was in excellent condition on this day, carefully performing the rearranged numbers that he had rehearsed with his new band. This is one of Johnny’s finest performances from his final years. This incredibly rare track, “Pizzeria,” a remake of Dion & the Belmonts’ hit “Runaround Sue” (a few seconds of its intro), was only heard on the live side of the “In Cold Blood” album. However, the cut was interrupted after a few seconds due to a guitar out-of-tune. Unfortunately, the intros to “Sad Vacation,” “You Don’t Own Me,” and “Who’s Been Talking?” are missing due to tape changes, but the rest of the set is complete. The setlist, which excludes the usual live staples, includes Lesley Gore’s 1960s smash “You Don’t Own Me” (featuring Alison on lead vocals), Howlin’ Wolf’s blues classic “Who’s Been Talking?”, Jamie’s saxophone-driven blues number “You Can Walk My Dog,” and a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Little Queenie.” This is a killer item not to be missed!
