19th September 1970 Afternoon & Evening Shows TRULY AMAZING/PERFECT SOUND
★UPGRADE!!!
Last week, when “BOSTON 1970” was released, the Madison Square Garden performance on September 19th was cited as one of the great performances from the US tour that took place in August and September of 1970. A compilation of the two shows was first released in 2017 as “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1970.” After that sold out, Graf Zeppelin updated the album in 2020 to produce “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1970 REVISITED.”
This is one of the early masterpieces of the “REVISITED” series, which has now been thoroughly restored by “GRAF ZEPPELIN.” It’s also a great recording that has long been sold out. It’s a great performance, rivaling Blueberry Hill, in September 1970, and the final performance of the tour. A stable supply of this recording is essential. This is especially true considering it was Zep’s first MSG performance.
As expected, GRAF ZEPPELIN handled the restoration, and the work on the 2017 to 2020 editions, including the conversion to mono, was completed satisfactorily. In fact, they could have simply reissued the latter. However, five years have passed since the release of the original, so they have undertaken further review for this reissue.
Again, the 2020 version already showed a sufficient level of perfection. One track that didn’t quite make it to the stage was “Thank You” from the Afternoon Show. The recording of this song had wow-flashing distortion, and the interlude was so distorted that it seemed as if Jimmy was playing a Strat with an arm just for this particular performance. GRAF ZEPPELIN has boldly corrected this. Of course, it’s not completely fixed, but it’s still significantly more stable than the 2020 version.
Also, although it is not a big change, the hum noise that was found in the quiet parts of, for example, the beginning of “Since I’ve Been Loving You” has been removed. Three types of sound sources are combined to give the afternoon a rough overall impression, but the main source is centered on Jimmy’s guitar, and the sound image is close, making it surprisingly easy to hear.
The evening show, which was discovered in the 21st century and caused a huge sensation, was flooded with items that were equalized to a greater or lesser extent when it was first released, but the 2017 edition achieved a natural release that wiped them out. Furthermore, the 2020 edition was finished in a state worthy of being the definitive edition.
In addition, like Afternoon, the hum noise has been removed, and more importantly, the overall volume and frequency range have been revised, resulting in a clearer, more easily listened to sound. Originally, the distortion of Evening increases as the live performance progresses, but this restoration will reduce the turbidity and make the sound clearer around “Out On The Tiles” towards the end of the live performance.
Due to their rising popularity, ZEP had already graduated from performing twice a day, but this was the final day of the tour and their first time at MSG, so they performed twice a day for the first time in a long time. For these reasons, the number of songs on Afternoon was reduced as the evening approached, but the explosive energy was still unique to September 1970, as heard at Blueberry Hill. The unexpected death of Jimi Hendrix the day before may have also contributed to the increased energy of the performance. It was actually mentioned in the MC.
Even in the evening after that first show, Plant’s voice remained perfectly steady as he shouted, a testament to his ’70s roots. And the finale of the show, as if giving it his all, was a spectacular performance. Just as they did at Blueberry Hill, they launched into “Some Other Guy,” but then the unexpected “The Train Kept A Rollin'” was a shocking performance that remains today.
The album also features the second live take of “Out On The Tiles,” a track from the soon-to-be-released new album, and a spectacular encore featuring a rock ‘n’ roll medley, the first since the Bass Festival. This September 1970 MSG performance is a testament to its status as a standout alongside Blueberry Hill. Graf Zeppelin has now completed the 2025 edition, worthy of being called the final version!
