Description
Live at Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ 19th September 1978 STEREO SBD
The 1978 tour, which enjoyed immense popularity among fans, saw numerous radio broadcasts, solidifying its unwavering popularity. This release features a full-length broadcast of the September 19th Passaic Capitol Theater performance, considered one of the ultimate shows. This broadcast was released on LP under the title “Piece De Resistance,” and has long been considered a classic among fans, even resulting in a CD release under the same title. However, these broadcasts cut out the station’s commentary and narration, as well as interviews with Bruce and his band during intermissions. While these cuts are understandably unrelated to the performance, this broadcast, arguably the most important live recording of Bruce’s career, qualifies as the ultimate version. The entire broadcast is included here, and it’s striking how excited the E Street Band members are, especially in the interviews mentioned above, even before the second half of the show begins. Furthermore, their post-show comments convey the excitement of the show. In addition to correcting the overall pitch (the part where the pitch becomes even higher from “Rosalita” has also been adjusted), the parts where there was reception noise between the songs from the end of “Sprit In The Night” to the beginning of “Darkness on the Edge of Town” have also been compensated for with a clean air check version from another sound source of the same broadcast, making it a complete recording. The performance content and powerful sound quality have long been a hallmark. Not only the best performance, but also the entire broadcast has been recorded, and the ultimate documentary of this legendary night is released on a limited press CD.
This is a summary of the review from Beatleg magazine, Vol. 126 (January 2011 issue).
With the release of “Darkness Box,” the full Darkness Tour live footage has finally been released, but the one performance that remains timeless and timeless is the September 19, 1978 Passaic performance. Bruce and the band were both at their peak on this day, and it remains immensely popular as a miraculous stereo line recording broadcast live on radio. Thanks to this, numerous recordings have been produced since the analog era, but while all of these have cut out the DJ comments and interviews from the broadcast, “THE WAY IT WAS,” which appeared online in 2007, recorded the entire broadcast. This documentary of that legendary night has finally been released as an item. Previous recordings from this day, such as Great Dane’s “PEACE DE RESISTANCE” and Crystal Cat’s “PASSAIC NIGHT,” have a bright, typical aircheck quality, while Segal’s “SOUTHSIDE BRUCE & THE E STREET JUKES” lacks a bit of depth. This release, however, offers a rounded, mellow, and natural sound. However, the section from the end of “Sprit In The Night” to the beginning of “Darkness on the Edge of Town” (the “Independence Day” section in Vol. 96 was incorrectly labeled “Independence Day” and will be corrected accordingly), which has been beautifully patched in. The overall pitch of this recording is higher, and like “PEACE DE?” and “PASSAIC?”, it rises even higher after “Rosalita,” but this has been compensated for as much as possible (except for a slight slowing of the pitch on “Born To Run”), making it extremely listenable. The DJ’s periodic comments convey the excitement and realism of the broadcast, and during the intermission, the E Street Band’s high-energy performances, compared to Bruce’s already recharging energy, are a laugh-out-loud delight. The tour’s greatest performances, “Prove It All Night” and “Backstreets,” have been talked about to the fullest. This is an undeniable item, both as the definitive version of this classic recording and as a companion to this official release, and of course, it’s released on a disc.
