★First appearance of soundboard!!
GENESIS continues to be the subject of a historic first appearance soundboard excavation rush. The latest edition, “THE MAMA Tour”, will be released simultaneously as two titles.
This work is the first part of a two-part series. It is a stereo soundboard recording of the “Hartford Performance on December 1, 1983.” At the time, it was the “GENESIS” era, when Hugh Padgham was promoted to producer. While recording the band’s biggest hits, each member also actively pursued solo activities. Let’s take a look back at the situation at the time and take a closer look at the position of this work.
●1983
January 22nd – February 20th: Phil’s solo tour
(April/June: “THE WICKED LADY” and “THE FUGITIVE” released)
(October 3rd: “GENESIS” released)
November 7th – December 17th: North America #1 (35 shows) ←★Here★
●1984
January 6th – February 20th: North America #2 (31 shows)
February 25th – 29th: UK (5 shows) ←※Official footage
(May – December: “NO JACKET REQUIRED” production)
This is GENESIS in 1983/1984. It was a two-year period that began with Phil Collins’ “HELLO, I MUST BE GOING Tour” and ended with “NO JACKET REQUIRED.” At its core were “GENESIS” and “THE MAMA Tour.” Among them, “North America #1” was the period of mass production of famous recordings. Not only this week’s two consecutive works, but our soundboard masterpiece “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER (Amity 515)” was also from the same period. Let’s focus on the dates further and check their relative positions.
● Details of “North America # 1”
・November 7th-25th (15 performances)
*November 26th “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER”
*November 27th “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER” ・
November 28th-30th (3 performances)
*December 1st: Hartford performance ←★This work★
・December 2nd-5th (4 performances)
*December 7th “PITTSBURGH 1983 SOUNDBOARD”
・December 8th-17th (8 performances)
…And that’s how it is. The Hartford performance of this work is a secret night where even audience recordings have not been found until now. You can suddenly experience live performances that no one has ever heard on the sound board.
And the sound is also intense. Anyone who has experienced even one of the recent first-time soundboard series will have realized that its individuality is a superb product directly connected to the mix table. The mix for the on-site PA is raw and unprocessed, with each sound standing out strangely, invading your brain with an incredible sense of directness and separation. You can experience a sense of synchronization in another dimension, as if the ensemble is being reconstructed in your cranium.
Moreover, this work is a 100% pure soundboard. This series is a pattern in which missing recordings are supplemented with audience recordings on the same day and then released, and sometimes matrixed. However, no guest recordings have been discovered for the Hartford performance, and there is no complement or matrix. You can immerse yourself in the sound world of the on-site soundboard alone.
Such a direct sound is depicted as a full show that far surpasses the official video “THE MAMA TOUR”. Compared to the official video, which was 1 hour 42 minutes, this work is 2 hours 29 minutes. The number of songs is also different. Finally, let’s organize it by comparison.
●When they were a three-person band
・Abacab: Dodo-Lurker (★) / Abacab / Man On The Corner (★) / Who Dunnit? (★) / Keep It Dark
・Genesis: That’s All / Mama / Illegal Alien / Home By The Sea / Second Home By The Sea / It’s Gonna Get Better
・Other: Follow You, Follow Me (★) / Misunderstanding (★★) / Turn It On Again
●Classics
medley [★: Eleventh Earl of Mar / Squonk / Firth of Fifth] [In the Cage / The Cinema Show / In That Quiet Earth / The Colony of Slippermen / Afterglow]
・Other: Carpet Crawlers (★) / Los Endos (★)
*Note: Songs marked with “★” cannot be heard in the official video “THE MAMA TOUR”. In particular, songs marked with “★★” are not also on the sister album “PITTSBURGH 1983 SOUNDBOARD”.
Not only the official footage, but also the two-performance set “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER” has many flaws, and the full experience of “THE MAMA Tour” has relied on audience recordings. This is a shocking new excavation album that allows you to enjoy the entire show with a superb soundboard. It is no exaggeration to say that this two-disc set is already on par with the studio work “GENESIS” as the tour’s greatest masterpiece. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★A stereo soundboard recording of the “Hartford Performance on December 1, 1983.” This is a superb product directly connected to the mixing desk, with an otherworldly sense of synchronization that seems to reconstruct the ensemble inside your skull. Featuring more tracks than the official footage, “PHILADELPHIA 1983: PRE-FM MASTER,” and “PITTSBURGH 1983 SOUNDBOARD,” this is a stunning new masterpiece that could be considered the pinnacle of “THE MAMA Tour.”
