“Free as a Bird” [The Beatles Anthology Project]
The “Anthology” project, which summarized the history of The Beatles from their origins to their breakup, was planned for many years and announced in 1995 as a wide-ranging project ranging from a trilogy of albums featuring rare recordings to books and video works including TV broadcasts, attracting the attention of Beatles fans worldwide. The trilogy of albums chronicles the band’s history, from their pre-debut period through to their breakup. Featuring previously unreleased studio outtakes, TV footage, and live concert recordings, the project also features two new songs, “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love,” based on recordings left behind by John Lennon. The final new song in the trilogy, “Now and Then,” remained unreleased at the time, but was finally released in 2023 for the first time in 27 years. It still garnered attention as the “final new Beatles song.” Unreleased Beatles material was previously planned for release on the album “Sessions,” but was shelved. In the 1980s, unofficial releases like “Ultra Rare Tracks” and “Underpast Masters” were unofficially released. The trilogy of albums and video works from this “anthology” project garnered significant attention at the time as a culmination of previously unreleased recordings and footage. However, “Anthology” is a carefully curated collection, and there are still many unreleased recordings from Abbey Road Studios, as well as live recordings and footage from around the world, many of which have yet to be released. Future releases, including new discoveries, are anticipated.
[Anthology 1: Anniversary Edition]
This 30th anniversary edition of “Anthology 1” features a newly edited and expanded version of 115 tracks, including numerous unreleased tracks from the 1995 release, including outtakes, demos, TV shows, and live performances. Compared to the original, the sound quality has been improved, and the album has been completely updated and remastered with new sources, including newly discovered and never-before-seen recordings. “Anthology 1” covers the band’s early years, from their pre-debut days in Liverpool, to their legendary Decca audition, the Beatlemania craze, their first appearance in the US, and their first starring role in a film, all the way up to the end of 1964, when they took the world by storm. Disc 1 begins with the new song “Free as a Bird,” just like the original. It features a newly remixed sound, with John’s vocals more realistic and cleaner, and the performance itself is of higher quality. It then opens with the Quarrymen’s performance at Woolton Church, the site of the Beatles’ first meeting, the earliest surviving recording. The first two tracks, “That’ll Be the Day” and “In Spite of All the Danger,” feature significantly improved audio quality compared to previous versions. The legendary Decca Audition, renowned for its historical value, includes all 15 tracks, including the original five tracks. Recorded in a newly remixed stereo version of the original mono recording, it also includes rare live recordings from the Cavern Club and Hamburg Star Club, not previously included on the original discs. Disc 2 features the band’s first recordings at EMI, studio outtakes from their debut albums “Please Please Me” and “With the Beatles,” early BBC radio broadcasts, and recently unearthed recordings from 1963 at EMI House. These recordings are also presented in high-quality quality from new sources. Furthermore, a live radio broadcast from Stockholm, Sweden, a familiar early live recording, has been demixed from mono to true stereo, highlighting its even more powerful performance. Disc 3 features the historic “Royal Variety Performance,” featuring the entire album in its first stereo demix, including John’s legendary commentary. Studio session recordings from the albums “A Hard Day’s Night,” which served as the soundtrack for his first film, and “Beatles for Sale,” many of which were originally mono, are also presented in stereo demixes. Compared to the originals, each upgraded recording features new masters from new sources.
