Description

A must-have for enthusiasts, the M Claudel label has released a recording of John Lennon’s final recording sessions. These fruitful sessions, held between August and October 1980 at New York’s Hit Factory and Record Plant, resulted in the albums “Double Fantasy” and “Milk and Honey,” and the posthumous album “Milk and Honey,” and this release features tracks from “Double Fantasy.”
This album, packed with classics now considered standards, garnered attention for its sophisticated rock ‘n’ roll and John’s youthful vocals, befitting the new ’80s era. These classic tracks were written piecemeal during a period that seemed to halt musical activity after the birth of Sean, and the leitmotifs that came together can be heard on demo tapes at all stages of production. Leaving aside the extensive demo tapes for another opportunity, this release captures the sessions at the stage when the songs were more or less complete and ready for actual recording in the studio. Many of the sessions held at both the Hit Factory and the Record Plant in New York City have been recorded, both officially and unofficially, resulting in many half-baked collector’s items. This four-disc set completely covers them all, eliminating all need for a comprehensive collection.

Disc 1 features two tracks, “STARTING OVER” and “CLEAN UP TIME.” The album begins with a lively performance of “(JUST LIKE) STARTING OVER,” released as the fitting first single from their first new album in five years, as they check the chords on guitar. The recordings also include footage of repeated rehearsals. In between sessions, the band seemingly enjoys their first studio recording in a long time, playing tracks like “Only The Lonely” and “Gone From This Place” for fun.

Disc 2 features “I’M LOSING YOU,” a recording session from that time, and “I’M MOVING ON.” “I’M LOSING YOU” was originally recorded with Cheap Trick. John’s rock ‘n’ roll voice, backed by Rick Nielsen’s intense guitar playing, creates a tense session. Unfortunately, the Cheap Trick session was shelved due to the arrangement being too demanding, but the recordings heard here make it clear that the heavy-duty arrangements would have stood out when mixed with the other songs. The “I’M LOSING YOU” session was relatively long and appears on the latter half of Disc 2. Forgetting the original “I’M LOSING YOU,” they happily perform The Beatles’ “SHE’S A WOMAN” (and Paul’s!) and other oldies. Another unique feature of this album is that it includes not only John’s songs but also Yoko’s. Like “I’M LOSING YOU,” Yoko’s “I’M MOVING ON” is included in a hard-hitting arrangement featuring Cheap Trick. Of course, it’s recorded separately, not connected as a medley.

Disc 3 features four session tracks: “Beautiful Boy,” “Watching the Wheels,” “I’m Your Angel,” and “Dear Yoko.” John felt a strong attachment to “Beautiful Boy,” a song he wrote for his beloved son, Sean, and recorded it with numerous variations on the vocals and lyrics. It’s interesting to compare the final release with the original. We also get to hear an outtake of “Your Angel,” which is relatively easy on the ears on this album. (laughs)

Disc 4 features three session tracks: “Woman,” “Every Man,” and “Hard Times Are Over.” “Woman” has become a standard, and compared to the Beatles version, the 1980 version of “Girl” is a popular song, featuring effective breathwork, typical of John. A total of 12 versions are included. While there are separate versions of “Every Man” by John and Yoko, a duet version is rare.

Finally, bonus tracks include the basic tracks of “STARTING OVER” and “WOMAN,” a longer version of “STARTING OVER” that was previously only included on the 12-inch promo, and John’s version of “MAGGIE MAE” from the same session, even though the radio DJ and interview overlap.

This four-disc set features outtakes, alternate versions, and recordings of the sessions from John and Yoko’s classic “Double Fantasy.” This solidly pressed vinyl comes with a beautiful picture disc for permanent preservation. We recommend purchasing it alongside the simultaneously released “MILK AND HONEY RECORDING SESSIONS.” It also includes a Japanese obi.
